High lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] is a well-established cardiovascular (CV) risk factor, but the effect of mildly elevated Lp(a) on CV health is largely unknown. Our aim was to evaluate if Lp(a) is associated with the severity of carotid atherosclerosis (CA) in the specific subset of metabolic syndrome (MetS). Subjects with diagnosed MetS and ultrasound-assessed CA were enrolled. Those patients were categorized according to the severity of CA (moderate vs. severe), and the circulating levels of Lp(a) alongside with clinical, anthropometric, and biochemical data were collected. Sixty-five patients were finally included: twenty-five with moderate and forty with severe CA (all with asymptomatic disease). Intergroup comparison showed Lp(a) as the only significantly different variable [6 (2-12) mg/dl vs. 11.5 (6-29.5) mg/dl; = 0.018]. Circulating levels of Lp(a) were also confirmed as the only variable independently associated with severity of CA at logistic regression analysis [OR 2.9 (95% CI 1.1-7.8); = 0.040]. ROC curve analysis for Lp(a) confirmed a serum level of 10 mg/dl as the best cut-off value [AUC 0.675 (95% CI 0.548-0.786)]. Although sensitivity and specificity were suboptimal (69.0 and 70.4%, respectively)-likely due to the small sample size-this result is in line with those previously reported in the literature. Lp(a) is independently associated with severity of CA in the subgroup of MetS patients.

This study aimed to investigate the direct association between domestic violence and the indirect association of exposure through pregnancy, delivery, and neonatal risk factors with severe maternal morbidity (SMM). The target population of this case-control study included all women who gave birth in the hospitals of the Torbat Heidarieh University of Medical Science from June 2018 to May 2020. A total of 123 mothers with SMM according to the World Health Organization criteria were selected as cases, and 127 mothers who did not meet the World Health Organization criteria were included in the control group.

Background: To assess the impact of attaining aggressive beta-lactam pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) targets on clinical efficacy in critical orthotopic liver transplant (OLT) recipients with documented early Gram-negative infections.

Methods: OLT recipients admitted to the post-transplant ICU between June 2021 and May 2024 having documented Gram-negative infections treated with targeted therapy continuous infusion (CI) beta-lactams, and undergoing therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM)-guided beta-lactam dosing adjustment in the first 72 hours were prospectively enrolled. Free steady-state concentrations (fCss) of beta-lactams (BL) and/or of beta-lactamase inhibitors (BLI) were calculated, and aggressive PK/PD target attainment was measured.

20% acute pancreatitis (AP) develops into severe AP (SAP), a global health crisis, with an increased mortality rate to 30%-50%. Mitochondrial damage and immune disorders are direct factors, which exacerbate the occurrence and progression of AP. So far, mitochondrial and immunity injury in SAP remains largely elusive, with no established treatment options available.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is an important viral zoonotic disease that not only affects ruminants but causes serious morbidity and mortality in humans. In humans, its symptoms range from mild flu-like signs to a severe form such as retinal damage, meningoencephalitis to haemorrhagic fever. In this study, 202 human serum samples were collected from central and western parts of Zambia and tested for RVF-specific antibodies using a commercially available ELISA kit.
