An understanding of acid-base physiology is necessary for clinicians to recognize and correct problems that may negatively affect provision of nutrition support and drug therapy. An overview of acid-base physiology, the different acid-base disorders encountered in practice, a stepwise approach to evaluate arterial blood gases, and other key diagnostic tools helpful in formulating a safe and effective medical and nutrition plan are covered in this acid-base primer. Case scenarios are also provided for the application of principles and the development of clinical skills.

Background: Anorexia nervosa has the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric disorder, and purging behaviors can cause a fatal electrolyte and acid-base imbalance. Routine laboratory testing during inpatient care is essential because these patients often provide inaccurate information about their diet and purging behaviors. However, blood gas analysis for an acid-base evaluation is rarely performed in the psychiatric setting because psychiatrists are not accustomed to evaluating the results.

Ethylene glycol (C₂H₆O₂), a toxic alcohol commonly found in automotive antifreeze, de-icing solutions, and industrial coolants, can cause severe toxicity when ingested. Due to its sweet taste, it is often consumed accidentally or intentionally, leading to life-threatening consequences such as metabolic acidosis, acute kidney injury (AKI), and mortality. Prompt diagnosis and early treatment with antidotes such as fomepizole or ethanol, combined with hemodialysis, are essential in preventing severe outcomes.

The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is a vital organelle responsible for protein quality control, including the folding, modification, and transport of proteins. When misfolded or unfolded proteins accumulate in the ER, it triggers endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) and activates the unfolded protein response (UPR) to restore ER homeostasis. However, prolonged or excessive ERS can lead to apoptosis.

Introduction: After the neonatal period Eimeriosis is one of the most common causes of large intestinal diarrhea in calves. In contrast to neonatal calves with diarrhea, there are very few reports about the clinicopathological alterations in affected animals, which are mainly based on experimental data. The aim of the present study was therefore to characterize acid-base and related clinicopathologic alterations in calves with Eimeria-associated diarrhea and to identify variables associated with in-hospital mortality.
