Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a complex condition with multiple etiological factors. The ability to identify a potential underlying cause is crucial for accurate diagnosis, patient management, and prognostication. This article presents a series of three patient cases to illustrate the enigmatic nature of PH diagnosis.

Origin stories: how does learned migratory behaviour arise in populations?

Biol Rev Camb Philos Soc

Although decades of research have deepened our understanding of the proximate triggers and ultimate drivers of migrations for a range of taxa, how populations establish migrations remains a mystery. However, recent studies have begun to illuminate the interplay between genetically inherited and learned migrations, opening the door to the evaluation of how migration may be learned, established, and maintained. Nevertheless, for migratory species where the role of learning is evident, we lack a comprehensive framework for understanding how populations learn specific routes and refine migratory movements over time (i.

Background: Medical education in North America was shaped by a biomedically bounded framework dating back to the early nineteenth century. Yet, one renowned physician, William Osler (1849-1919), seemed to stand out among his contemporaries by promoting acupuncture as a form of treatment. Some physicians in the early 1970s proposed that Osler was ahead of his time by including acupuncture in his medical textbook, (1892).

Mystery of gamma wave stimulation in brain disorders.

Mol Neurodegener

December 2024

School of Physical Education and Sports Science, South China Normal University, Guangzhou, 510006, China.

Neuronal oscillations refer to rhythmic and periodic fluctuations of electrical activity in the central nervous system that arise from the cellular properties of diverse neuronal populations and their interactions. Specifically, gamma oscillations play a crucial role in governing the connectivity between distinct brain regions, which are essential in perception, motor control, memory, and emotions. In this context, we recapitulate various current stimulation methods to induce gamma entrainment.

Background: Research on the parasitic plant genus Cuscuta has flourished since the genomes of several of its species were published. Most of the research revolves around the iconic infection organ that secures the parasite's sustenance: the haustorium. The interest in understanding the structure-function-regulation relationship of the haustorium is based as much on the wish to find ways to keep the parasite under control as on the opportunities it offers to shed light on various open questions in plant biology.
