As an extraordinarily diverse group of bacteria, lactobacilli are now classified into several genera, many of which still include "Lactobacillus" in their names. Despite their names, this group of lactic acid bacteria comprises microorganisms that are crucial for human health, especially during the early development of the human microbiota and immune system. The interactions between lactobacilli and components of the mucosal immunity lead to its shaping and development, which is possibly considered a prime mover in the advancement of the human immune system.

Objective: We aimed to outline the experience with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for respiratory and cardiac failure in neonates in our institution and compare our results with those from other countries.
Method: The clinical data of 28 neonates who required ECMO assistance were studied retrospectively.
Results: A total of 28 neonates underwent support with veno-arterial ECMO, including 14 cardiac support and 14 respiratory support.

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) among women and infants during the perinatal period is not rare, particularly in countries with a high TB burden. And the risk would increase significantly following in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVFET). Worse still, TB in this stage is apt to develop into severe forms in women and neonates, such as disseminated TB or tuberculous meningitis (TBM).
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Neonatal birth/perinatal asphyxia is a critical condition that can adversely affect many different bodily tissues, particularly the brain; depending on duration and severity of asphyxia, leading to difficulties and lifelong disabilities. These can be avoided by early detection of the biochemical derangements and prompt intervention. Serum alpha-ketoglutarate (α-KG) and cord blood lactate have been found to be associated with birth asphyxia and may have potential to act as biomarkers for birth asphyxia.

Objective: To explore the clinical phenotypes and genetic variant in a neonatal case of Mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome type 13 (MTDPS13).
Methods: Clinical data and results of genetic testing of a neonate admitted to the Children's Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine in January 2023 was retrospectively analyzed. The study was approved by the Medical Ethics Committee of the Children's Hospital of Zhejiang University.
