Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a crucial role in the mammalian system in both normal and pathological conditions. Hence, this work prepared and characterized the ROS responsive cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO NPs) decorated 5-fluorouracil (5FU) loaded chitosan (CS) nanoparticles (CS-5FU NPs) for enhanced anticancer activity in hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2 cells). CeO NPs decorated CS-5FU NPs were found to be spherical in shape and black dense aggregated particles sized 200 nm. The functional properties and cubic crystalline structure of CeO NPs were studied by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, respectively. Further, CS-5FU-CeO NPs attenuated the 2,2'-Azobis (2-methylpropionamidine) dihydrochloride (AAPH) induced ROS formation in mouse embryonic fibroblasts (NIH3T3 cells) while enhancing apoptosis in HepG2 cells by controlled delivery of 5FU. Furthermore, CS-5FU-CeO NPs have not exhibited toxicity to red blood cells (RBCs) and chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM). Hence, this work concluded that CS-5FU-CeO NPs synergistically enhanced anticancer activity in HepG2 cells through the regulation of ROS.

To provide accurate diagnostic evidence for early hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection-related diseases, this study targeted HBV DNA as an analyte, where a sandwich-type electrochemical DNA sensor based on gold nanoparticles/reduced graphene oxide (Au NPs/ERGO) and cerium oxide/gold-platinum nanoparticles (CeO/AuPt NPs) was constructed. Au NPs/ERGO composite nanomaterials were first synthesized on the surface of a glass carbon electrode using electrochemical co-reduction, which significantly improved the specific surface area and electrical conductivity of the electrode. Further specific hybridization of target HBV-DNA was performed by combining capture probe DNA (S1-DNA) bound to AuNPs/ERGO with CeO/AuPt modified signal probe DNA (S2-DNA).

Poor diabetic wound healing poses a critical threat to human health. Excessive oxidative stress and increased susceptibility to bacterial infection are key issues that impede diabetic wound healing. Cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO NPs) have attracted increasing attention because of their unique antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.

Background: Cardiac fibrosis plays a critical role in the progression of various forms of heart disease, significantly increasing the risk of sudden cardiac death. However, currently, there are no therapeutic strategies available to prevent the onset of cardiac fibrosis.

Methods And Results: Here, biomimetic ATP-responsive nanozymes based on genetically engineered cell membranes are adapted to specifically recognize activated cardiac fibroblasts (CFs) for the treatment of cardiac fibrosis.

Ionizing radiation leads to the development of oxidative stress and damage to biologically important macromolecules (DNA, mitochondria, etc.), which in turn lead to cell death. In the case of radiotherapy, both cancer cells and normal cells are damaged.
