The well-known limitation of alkaline fuel cells is the slack kinetics of the cathodic half-cell reaction, the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Platinum, being the most active ORR catalyst, is still facing challenges due to its corrosive nature and sluggish kinetics. Many novel approaches for substituting Pt have been reported, which suffer from stability issues even after mighty modifications. Designing an extremely stable, but unexplored ordered intermetallic structure, PdGe, and tuning the electronic environment of the active sites by site-selective Pt substitution to overcome the hurdle of alkaline ORR is the main motive of this paper. The substitution of platinum atoms at a specific Pd position leads to PtPdGe demonstrating a half-wave potential () of 0.95 V vs RHE, which outperforms the state-of-the-art catalyst 20% Pt/C. The mass activity (MA) of PtPdGe is 320 mA/mg, which is almost 3.2 times better than that of Pt/C. and MA remained unaltered even after 50,000 accelerated degradation test (ADT) cycles, which makes it a promising stable catalyst with its activity better than that of the state-of-the-art Pt/C. The undesired 2e transfer ORR forming hydrogen peroxide (HO) is diminished in PtPdGe as visible from the rotating ring-disk electrode (RRDE) experiment, spectroscopically visualized by in situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and supported by computational studies. The effect of Pt substitution on Pd has been properly manifested by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The swinging of the oxidation state of atomic sites of PtPdGe during the reaction is probed by in situ XAS, which efficiently enhances 4e transfer, producing an extremely low percentage of HO.

Biomimetic Nanostructure Engineering of Ultralow Ir-Loading Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Reduction Reaction.

Industrial Research Institute of Nonwovens & Technical Textiles, Shandong Engineering Research Center for Specialty Nonwoven Materials, College of Textiles & Clothing, Qingdao University, Qingdao, Shandong 266071, P. R. China.

Promoting the rate of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is critical for boosting the overall energy efficiency of the flexible zinc-air batteries (FZABs). Inspired by nature, we designed "branch-leaf" like hierarchical porous carbon nanofibers with ultralow loadings of Ir nanoparticles (NPs) derived from covalent-organic framework/metal-organic framework (COF/MOF) core-shell hybrids. The as-obtained Ir/FeZn-hierarchical porous carbon nanofibers (HPCNFs) showcase enhanced ORR performance, and the ultralow Ir loading reduces the cost while maintaining catalytic capacity.

Exploring the impact of nano platinum-hydrogen saline on oxygen-induced retinopathy in neonatal rats.

J Matern Fetal Neonatal Med

December 2025

Department of Pediatrics, Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Hospital of Wuhan, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan No.1 Hospital, Wuhan, China.

Objective: The objective of this study is to assess the impact of nano platinum-hydrogen saline (Pt NPs + H) on oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR) in neonatal rats, with the goal to contribute new insights into the therapeutic strategies for retinopathy of prematurity.

Methods: Pt NPs + H formulation was synthesized to address OIR in a rat model. Subsequent examination included the assessment of retinal blood vessel distribution and morphology through hematoxylin and eosin (HE) and isolectin B4 (IB4) staining techniques.

Electrocatalytic CO-to-CO conversion with a high CO Faradaic efficiency (FE) at low overpotentials and industrial-level current densities is highly desirable but a huge challenge over non-noble metal catalysts. Herein, graphitic N-rich porous carbons supporting atomically dispersed nickel (NiN-O sites with an axial oxygen) were synthesized (denoted as O-Ni-N-GC) and applied as the cathode catalyst in a CORR flow cell. O-Ni-N-GC showed excellent selectivity with a FE over 92% at low overpotentials ranging from 17 to 60 mV, and over 99% at 80 mV.

Rational Regulation of High-Entropy Perovskite Oxides through Hole Doping for Efficient Oxygen Electrocatalysis.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

January 2025

Henan Provincial Key Laboratory of Nanocomposites and Applications, Institute of Nanostructured Functional Materials, Huanghe Science and Technology College, Zhengzhou, Henan 450006, China.

Due to the high configuration entropy, unique atomic arrangement, and electronic structures, high-entropy materials are being actively pursued as bifunctional catalysts for both the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs). However, a relevant strategy to enhance the catalytic activity of high-entropy materials is still lacking. Herein, a hole doping strategy has been employed to enable the high-entropy perovskite La(CrMnFeCoNi)O to effectively catalyze the ORR and OER.
