We study the Casimir interaction between two dielectric spheres immersed in a salted solution at distances larger than the Debye screening length. The long distance behavior is dominated by the nonscreened interaction due to low-frequency transverse magnetic thermal fluctuations. It shows universality properties in its dependence on geometric dimensions and independence of dielectric functions of the particles, with these properties related to approximate conformal invariance. The universal interaction overtakes nonuniversal contributions at distances of the order of or larger than 0.1  μm, with a magnitude of the order of the thermal scale k_{B}T such as to make it important for the modeling of colloids and biological interfaces.

It is well established that the long-range van der Waals or thermal Casimir interaction between two semi-infinite dielectrics separated by a distance H is screened by an intervening electrolyte. Here we show how this interaction is modified when an electric field of strength E is applied parallel to the dielectric boundaries, leading to a nonequilibrium steady state with a current. The presence of the field induces a long-range thermal repulsive interaction, scaling just like the thermal Casimir interaction between dielectrics without the intervening electrolyte, i.

Casimir interaction driven by hyperbolic polaritons.

Nanophotonics

Casimir interaction is an intriguing phenomenon that is induced by electromagnetic quantum fluctuations, which dominates the interaction between microstructures at small separations and is essential for micro- and nano-electromechanical systems (MEMS and NEMS). However, Casimir interaction driven by hyperbolic polaritons remains an unexplored frontier. In this work, we investigate the Casimir interaction between natural hyperbolic material hexagonal boron nitride from the perspective of force distribution with different optical axis orientations for the first time.

Recent studies revealed anomalous underscreening in concentrated electrolytes, and we suggest that the underscreened electrostatic forces between membrane proteins play a significant role in the process of self-assembly. In this work, we assumed that the underscreened electrostatic forces compete with the thermodynamic Casimir forces induced by concentration fluctuations in the lipid bilayer, and developed a simplified model for a binary mixture of oppositely charged membrane proteins with different preference to liquid-ordered and liquid-disordered domains in the membrane. In the model, like macromolecules interact with short-range Casimir attraction and long-range electrostatic repulsion, and the cross-interaction is of the opposite sign.

Superchiral Light Emerging from Bound States in the Continuum in Metasurfaces of Si Nanorod Dimers.

Bound states in the continuum (BICs) in all-dielectric metasurfaces enhance light-matter interaction at the nanoscale due to their infinite factors and strong field confinement. Among a variety of phenomena already reported, their impact on chiral light has recently attracted great interest. Here we investigate the emergence of intrinsic and extrinsic optical chirality associated with the excitation of BICs in various metasurfaces made of Si nanorod dimers on a quartz substrate, comparing three cases: parallel nanorods (neutral) and shifted and slanted dimers, with/without index-matching superstrate.

Thioamide substitutions have been shown to impart valuable properties on peptides for biophysical experiments as well as cell or in vivo studies, but a rational understanding of thioamide effects on protein structure and protein-protein interactions is lacking. To elucidate their effects in β-sheet structures, we have used SpyCatcher003-SpyTag003 as a host-guest system to study individual thioamide incorporation at eight different positions in the SpyTag peptide. We have demonstrated that incorporating thioamides into SpyTag at specific positions can result in a ∼2-fold faster ligating complex, as well as >2000-fold slower ligating complex.
