In this work, the reagent Cyanex® 272 has been incorporated in a three-phase solvent bar micro-extraction system to selectively separate the inorganic and organic fractions of copper in seawater. Optimized conditions for micro-extraction of Cu fractions were 0.2 M Cyanex® 272 in the organic solution contained into the fiber pores, 0.5 M HCl as acceptor solution within the fiber, stirring rate of 500 rpm, and 60 min time of extraction, providing an enrichment factor of 51.6 ± 2.3. Experimental results for selective extraction of organic and inorganic Cu showed a good correlation with theoretical data for Cu speciation, and the relationship between enrichment factor and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration in the samples was used to predict total Cu concentration. Instrumental determination of Cu presented a linear response within the range 0.1-20 µg L, obtaining a limit of detection of 0.03 µg L. Finally, the method was successfully applied to the study of Cu fractions in real seawater samples collected from the Bay of Cádiz (Spain).

To date, it has been regarded as one of the most challenging issues to construct novel adsorbents possessing excellent adsorption performance toward heavy metals including copper ions (Cu(II)). Especially, it is controversy about the structural characteristics of chitosan-based adsorbents adsorbed with Cu(II) ions, which could function as new adsorbents. In this study, we adopt a freeze-drying process to synthesize honeycomb-like chitosan hydrogel beads crosslinked with citric acid (cCHBs), further characterize the microstructures of cCHBs and eventually reveal the thermodynamics equations for the removal of target Cu(II).

A micro-nano sharkskin like film (Cu-MNS-FA) was synthesized on copper surface through chemical etching followed by formate passivation, and its anticorrosive, antibacterial and thermal conductivity properties were investigated. Results show that after 7 d of exposure to nature, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Desulfovibrio vulgaris seawater, the charge transfer resistance of Cu-MNS-FA is more than three times higher than that of unmodified copper. In particular, in D.

Partial oxidation of methane (POM) is achieved by forming air-methane microbubbles in saltwater to which an alternating electric field is applied using a copper oxide foam electrode. The solubility of methane is increased by putting it in contact with water containing dissolved KCl or NaCl (3%). Being fully dispersed as microbubbles (20-40 µm in diameter), methane reacts more fully with hydroxyl radicals (OH·) at the gas-water interface.

Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Marine Microbiome Engineering Institute for Advanced Study, Shenzhen University, Shenzhen, China. Electronic address:

The ongoing decline in seawater pH, driven by the absorption of excess atmospheric CO, represents a major environmental issue. This reduction in pH can interact with metal pollution, resulting in complex effects on marine phytoplankton. In this study, we examined the combined impacts of seawater acidification and copper (Cu) exposure on the marine diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum.

Polyanionic Electrolyte Ionization Desalination Empowers Continuous Solar Evaporation Performance.

Adv Mater

December 2024

School of Engineering, Institute for Multiscale Thermofluids, The University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Scotland, EH9 3FD, UK.

Solar evaporation contributes to sustainable and environmentally friendly production of fresh water from seawater and wastewater. However, poor salt resistance and high degree of corrosion of traditional evaporators in brine make their implementation in real applications scarce. To overcome such deficiency, a polyanionic electrolyte functionalization strategy empowering excellent uniform desalination performance over extended periods of time is exploited.
