Drowning and submersion injuries are highly prevalent, yet preventable, causes of pediatric mortality and morbidity. Prehospital care should focus on restoring normal ventilation and circulation as quickly as possible to limit the extent of hypoxic insult. Diagnostic testing for symptomatic patients may include blood glucose level, arterial blood gas level, complete blood count, electrolyte levels, chest radiography, and cardiorespiratory monitoring with pulse oximetry and a rhythm strip. In this review, passive external, active external, and active internal rewarming techniques for treatment of hypothermic patients are discussed. A systematic approach to treatment and disposition of pediatric drowning victims is provided, and risk factors, caveats in pediatric care, and factors affecting prognosis are also discussed.

Thermotherapy is expected to assist in the prevention of arteriosclerosis and cardiovascular disease in individuals with spinal cord injuries. This study aimed to investigate the impact and underlying mechanisms of whole-body heat stress on cardiac function in patients with cervical spinal cord injury (CSCI) and healthy controls using head-out hot water immersion (HHWI). Eight male patients with complete motor CSCI and nine healthy controls were recruited.

Objective: To identify risk factors for clinically-important drowning-associated lung injury (ciDALI) in children.
Study Design: This was a cross-sectional study of children (0 through18 years) who presented to 32 pediatric emergency departments (EDs) from 2010 through 2017. We reviewed demographics, comorbidities, prehospital data, chest radiographs reports, and ED course from emergency medical services, medical, and fatality records.

Hydrogel bioadhesives with adequate wet adhesion and swelling resistance are urgently needed in clinic. However, the presence of blood or body fluid usually weakens the interfacial bonding strength, and even leads to adhesion failure. Herein, profiting from the unique coupling structure of carboxylic and phenyl groups in one component (N-acryloyl phenylalanine) for interfacial drainage and matrix toughening as well as various electrostatic interactions mediated by zwitterions, a novel hydrogel adhesive (PAAS) is developed with superior tissue adhesion properties and matrix swelling resistance in challenging wet conditions (adhesion strength of 85 kPa, interfacial toughness of 450 J m, burst pressure of 514 mmHg, and swelling ratio of <4%).

Background: Arterial gas embolism (AGE) may occur while breathing compressed air and failing to exhale during ascent to compensate for gas expansion as pressure decreases. Trauma to the lungs from over-pressurization may result in air bubbles entering the pulmonary veins and subsequently the systemic circulation, causing obstructed blood flow and inflammatory cascades. AGEs are known to always manifest within 10 min of surfacing from depth.

Firearm-related injury is the leading cause of death among US children and adolescents. Residents across specialties report low preparedness to provide firearm safety counseling. Virtual reality (VR) may offer a modality to support residents' skills through deliberate practice in a simulated setting.
