AI Article Synopsis

  • Radiotherapy, while effective for cancer, can lead to serious heart complications years later, prompting the need for increased awareness among clinicians about cardiac side effects.
  • A case study describes a young woman who experienced heart complications related to previous mediastinal radiotherapy, highlighting the long-term risks associated with this treatment.
  • Physicians are urged to proactively manage cardiovascular risk factors and implement routine imaging for early detection of issues, emphasizing the importance of screening and preventive measures to mitigate radiation-induced heart damage.

Article Abstract

Introduction: and importance: Although radiotherapy is a well-known cancer treatment and an important part of the therapeutic strategy for achieving long-term remission or disease control, the radiation-induced heart disease rates are high and may occur years later. This article aims to raise clinician awareness of cardiac side effects that can occur years after radiation therapy. In order to develop effective prevention strategies and improve clinical outcomes.

Case Presentation: Here, we present a rare case of a young female, on remission from breast carcinoma, who received mediastinal radiotherapy 13 years earlier, admitted in our department for recurrent syncope of sudden on-set. The etiology of heart block was attributed to the distant effect of radiation-induced cardiac toxicity based on her past medical history.

Clinical Discussion: Radiation promotes fibrosis in all cardiac components, raising the risk of coronary artery disease, cardiomyopathy, valvulopathy, arrhythmias, and pericardial illness. In this population, physicians should aggressively address additional cardiovascular risk factors, and recommendations recommend obtaining routine imaging once symptomatology is established.

Conclusion: Serious cardiovascular complications may develop several years after radiation treatment, Screening, early recognition, prevention and the use of certain drugs can be quite helpful in reducing radiation-induced heart damage.

Background: Delayed lead perforation is a rare complication of cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED). Clinical presentations range from completely asymptomatic to pericardial tamponade. Surgical lead extraction is recommended and transvenous lead extraction (TLE) with surgical backup is an alternative method.

Background: Coronary Artery Spasm (CAS) often presents in the epicardial coronary arteries. The anterior septal branch is distributed within the myocardium, and occurrences of spasms are rare. Currently, there is no available literature on this topic, and the onset of symptoms remains elusive, potentially leading to misdiagnosis.

Exposure to reactive oxygen species (ROS) can induce DNA-protein crosslinks (DPCs), unusually bulky DNA lesions that block replication and transcription and play a role in aging, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and neurodegenerative disorders. Repair of DPCs depends on the coordinated efforts of proteases and DNA repair enzymes to cleave the protein component of the lesion to smaller DNA-peptide crosslinks which can be processed by tyrosyl-DNA phosphodiesterases 1 and 2, nucleotide excision and homologous recombination repair pathways. DNA-dependent metalloprotease SPRTN plays a role in DPC repair, and SPRTN-deficient mice exhibit an accelerated aging phenotype and develop liver cancer early in life.

This study evaluated the effects of advanced footwear technology (AFT) spikes on running performance measures, spatiotemporal variables, and perceptive parameters on different surfaces (track and grass). Twenty-seven male trained runners were recruited for this study. In Experiment 1, participants performed 12 × 200 m at a self-perceived 3000 m running pace with a recovery of 5 min.

We examined the effect of botulinum toxin-A on upper limb impairments and activity limitations in chronic stroke. This study is a secondary analysis of control group data from a national, multicenter, Phase III randomized trial with a masked outcome assessment. We studied 71 stroke survivors who received a botulinum toxin-A injection in any muscle(s) that crosses the wrist due to significant spasticity after a stroke greater than 3 months previously.
