Manipulating ferroic orders and realizing their coupling in multiferroics at room temperature are promising for designing future multifunctional devices. Single external stimulation has been extensively proved to demonstrate the ability of ferroelastic switching in multiferroic oxides, which is crucial to bridge the ferroelectricity and magnetism. However, it is still challenging to directly realize multi-field-driven magnetoelectric coupling in multiferroic oxides as potential multifunctional electrical devices. Here, novel magneto-electric-optical coupling in multiferroic BiFeO -based thin films at room temperature mediated by deterministic ferroelastic switching using piezoresponse/magnetic force microscopy and aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy are shown. Reversible photoinduced ferroelastic switching exhibiting magnetoelectric responses is confirmed in BiFeO -based films, which works at flexible strain states. This work directly demonstrates room-temperature magneto-electric-optical coupling in multiferroic films, which provides a framework for designing potential multi-field-driven magnetoelectric devices such as energy conservation memories.

Ferro-Valleytricity with In-Plane Spin Magnetization.

School of Physics, State Key Laboratory of Crystal Materials, Shandong University, Shandanan Street 27, Jinan 250100, China.

Ferro-valleytricity that manifests spin-orbit coupling (SOC)-induced spontaneous valley polarization is generally considered to occur in two-dimensional (2D) materials with out-of-plane spin magnetization. Here, we propose a mechanism to realize SOC-induced valley polarization and ferro-valleytricity in 2D materials with in-plane spin magnetization, wherein the physics correlates to non-collinear magnetism in triangular lattice. Our model analysis provides comprehensive ingredients that allow for ferro-valleytricity with in-plane spin magnetization, revealing that mirror symmetry favors remarkable valley polarization and time-reversal-mirror joint symmetry should be excluded.

Ferrotoroidicity in CsFeCl·DO.

Sci Rep

Institut Laue-Langevin, 71, av des Martyrs CS 20156, Grenoble, 38042, France.

The promise of antiferromagnetic spintronics largely relies on the possibilities of electrical manipulation of antiferromagnetic states, which requires the exploration of innovative material platforms to meet the challenge. Erythrosiderite-type compounds constitute a class of non-oxide materials presenting magneto-electric couplings ranging from multiferroicity to linear magneto-electric behaviour. In this communication, we demonstrate that Cs[FeCl(DO)] shows evidence of another ferroic order, ferrotoroidicity, providing an alternative way of manipulating the magnetic states.

The observation of both resonant quantum tunneling of magnetization (RQTM) and resonant quantum magnetodielectric (RQMD) effect in the perovskite multiferroic metal-organic framework [CHNH]Co(HCOO).is reported. An intrinsic magnetic phase separation emerges at low temperatures due to the hydrogen-bond-modified long-range super-exchange interaction, leading to the coexistence of canted antiferromagnetic order and single-ion (Co) magnets.
