Disengaging from unattainable goals and reengaging in alternative goals is essential for effective goal pursuit; yet, surprisingly little is known about associated personality factors. Here, we focused on individual differences in self-control (domain-general self-control, if-then planning) and boredom (boredom proneness, boredom avoidance and escape tendencies). Concerning goal adjustment in everyday life (Study 1;  = 323 crowdworkers), if-then planning was associated with worse disengagement and better reengagement. While boredom proneness was associated with poorer reengagement, boredom avoidance and escape tendencies were associated with better reengagement. When goal striving was thwarted during the COVID-19 pandemic (Study 2;  = 97 students), similar associations emerged along with links to anxiety and depression. However, disengagement was no longer associated with if-then planning but instead with better self-control and higher boredom proneness. These results show differential relationships of goal disengagement and reengagement with self-control and boredom, paving the way to a better understanding of who struggles or shines when effective goal adjustment is required.

Background: Nipple-sparing mastectomy (NSM) is infrequently performed in older women, at least in part owing to concerns regarding age-related complications. We describe postoperative outcomes of NSM in older women and risk factors for complications, with the goal of informing patient selection and decision-making.

Patients And Methods: Cases of NSM with immediate implant-based reconstruction were identified from an institutional database (2009-2019).

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Departments of Neurology, Psychiatry, and Epidemiology, Gertrude H. Sergievsky Center, The Taub Institute for Research on Alzheimer's Disease and the Aging Brain, Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, New York, NY, USA.

Background: Cardio and cerebrovascular risk factors (CVRFs) increase the risk of cerebrovascular disease and clinical Alzheimer's Disease (AD), and over 70% of the patients with AD coincident cerebrovascular pathology. We previously found that FMNL2 interacts with a burden score of hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, and body mass index (BMI) by altering the normal astroglial-vascular mechanisms that underly amyloid clearance. Stroke, defined by history of a clinical stroke or brain imaging, is a moderately robust risk factor for AD and dementia.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Alzheimer's Disease Cooperative Study (ADCS), University of California, San Diego, La Jolla, CA, USA.

Background: Evaluating sex differences in modifiable risk factors for Alzheimer's disease could provide valuable information regarding the mechanisms by which these factors confer risk. Physical activity is a risk factor that has been shown to positively impact both telomere length, a marker of cellular age, and cognition. The goal of this study was to evaluate whether telomere length mediates the association between physical activity and cognition differently by sex.

Background: The long-term goal of Health & Aging Brain Study - Health Disparities (HABS-HD) is to establish population-specific informed precision medicine for novel treatment and prevention strategies as has been done in other fields. Genomic studies are integral to these efforts and contribute vital data regarding genetic ancestry of the HABS-HD participants, as well as whole genome sequence data, genome-wide genotype (Illumina Global Screening array version 3.0) and epigenetic data (Illumina EPIC DNA methylation array).

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

The Framingham Heart Study, Framingham, MA, USA.

Background: The long-term neurological impact of the SARS-CoV-2 virus is unknown and it remains to be seen whether it would create a surge in cases of dementia and cognitive decline years later, which is already a global public health challenge. Our group has previously shown that participants cognitive functioning as measured via mobile-based assessments using smartphone-based cognitive tests did not differ based on their COVID status. The goal of the present study was to examine participants longitudinal cognitive performance with the hypothesis that participants with a previous COVID-19 diagnosis (COVID+) will have worse cognitive performance over time than those without COVID-19 (COVID-).
