Background: Several studies suggested a significant role of epigenetic changes, including alterations in miRNA, histone modifications, and DNA methylation of α-synuclein (SNCA) in Parkinson's disease (PD) pathogenicity. As of yet, only very few studies have been carried out in this field in Africa and none in Sudan.

Materials And Methods: We collected DNA from 172 Sudanese individuals (90 cases, 82 controls) who donated saliva for DNA extraction (mean age of onset: 40.6 ± 22.4 years). A family history of PD was evident in 64 patients. DNA preparation and bisulfite sequencing of SNCA was performed as described earlier.

Results: Of the fourteen analyzed CpGs of SNCA, CpGs 16-23 were hypomethylated in PD (P-value ranged from 0.023 to 0.003). P-values improved, when sporadic cases were excluded from the analysis.

Conclusion: We identified the presence of a specific pattern of DNA methylation in a young Sudanese cohort of familial PD, which confirms the importance of the methylation of SNCA for PD. This phenomenon appears to be independent of ethnicity, the impact of environmental factors, drug history, or familial clustering.

Immunohistochemical Detection of CD147 Expression in Adenocarcinoma of the Prostate: A Case-Control Study.

Prostate Cancer

December 2024

Department of Histopathology and Cytology, Faculty of Medical Laboratory Sciences, Al-Neelain University, Khartoum, Sudan.

Prostate cancer is the most common noncutaneous malignancy among men worldwide, including in Sudan, where it represents a significant public health challenge. CD147, a transmembrane glycoprotein implicated in tumor progression, invasion, and metastasis, has shown potential as a prognostic biomarker in various cancers. This retrospective case-control study aimed to evaluate CD147 expression in prostate adenocarcinoma among Sudanese men and its association with tumor grade.

Background: Sudanese children with End-Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD) often show limited improvement in hemoglobin levels despite treatment with recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO). This study aims to assess the response to rHuEPO therapy by analyzing β-globin mRNA expression and reticulocyte parameters. Additionally, it classifies anemia among Sudanese pediatric patients based on iron status, considering age and gender as biological markers for evaluating treatment response.

Background: Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a hereditary condition characterized by aberrant red blood cell morphology, leading to persistent hemolytic anemia. The consequential impact of SCD on the pulmonary vasculature can result in pulmonary hypertension (PHT), a severe complication that detrimentally affects the well-being and survival of individuals with SCD. The prevalence and risk determinants of PHT in SCD patients exhibit variations across diverse geographical regions and populations.

Article Synopsis
  • - Asthma is a prevalent issue in Sudan, especially among children, with 13-16% of school children in Khartoum affected; a study found 14.4% of 229 patients at a pediatric asthma clinic exhibited severe asthma.
  • - The research identified that most patients were effectively managed and 90% had well-controlled asthma, predominantly affecting males and younger children, with 39.4% of severe cases classified as severe allergic asthma.
  • - The analysis showed no significant correlation between age or gender and the severity of asthma phenotypes, highlighting the need for better strategies for diagnosis and management tailored to individual asthma characteristics.

Background In HIV patients, anemia is the most common hematopoietic consequence, and it has a major influence on life satisfaction, morbidity, and survival. The epidemiology of anemia in this cohort in Sudan, however, is poorly characterized. Aim This study aims to assess the prevalence of anemia and its implications among HIV-positive patients.
