The fields of brain-inspired computing, robotics, and, more broadly, artificial intelligence (AI) seek to implement knowledge gleaned from the natural world into human-designed electronics and machines. In this review, the opportunities presented by complex oxides, a class of electronic ceramic materials whose properties can be elegantly tuned by doping, electron interactions, and a variety of external stimuli near room temperature, are discussed. The review begins with a discussion of natural intelligence at the elementary level in the nervous system, followed by collective intelligence and learning at the animal colony level mediated by social interactions. An important aspect highlighted is the vast spatial and temporal scales involved in learning and memory. The focus then turns to collective phenomena, such as metal-to-insulator transitions (MITs), ferroelectricity, and related examples, to highlight recent demonstrations of artificial neurons, synapses, and circuits and their learning. First-principles theoretical treatments of the electronic structure, and in situ synchrotron spectroscopy of operating devices are then discussed. The implementation of the experimental characteristics into neural networks and algorithm design is then revewed. Finally, outstanding materials challenges that require a microscopic understanding of the physical mechanisms, which will be essential for advancing the frontiers of neuromorphic computing, are highlighted.

An online reactive internal extraction electrospray ionization (iEESI) method was developed for the rapid determination of organic and inorganic speciation information for selenium in poultry tissue samples without complex sample pretreatment. The addition of citric acid as a reducing agent to the internal extraction solvent of methanol/acetic acid (99:1, V/V) for iEESI resulted in the reduction of selenate in the sample to selenite, accompanied by the production of malic acid as an oxidation product. The quantitative analysis of selenate was conducted by using malic acid.

FLASH radiotherapy (FLASH RT) is an innovative modality in cancer treatment that delivers ultrahigh dose rates (UHDRs), distinguishing it from conventional radiotherapy (CRT). FLASH RT has demonstrated the potential to enhance the therapeutic window by reducing radiation-induced damage to normal tissues while maintaining tumor control, a phenomenon termed the FLASH effect. Despite promising outcomes, the precise mechanisms underlying the FLASH effect remain elusive and are a focal point of current research.

Background: A neuroinflammatory disease such as Alzheimer's disease, presents a significant challenge in neurotherapeutics, particularly due to the complex etiology and allostatic factors, referred to as CNS stressors, that accelerate the development and progression of the disease. These CNS stressors include cerebral hypo-glucose metabolism, hyperinsulinemia, mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, impairment of neuronal autophagy, hypoxic insults and neuroinflammation. This study aims to explore the efficacy and safety of DAG-MAG-ΒHB, a novel ketone diester, in mitigating these risk factors by sustaining therapeutic ketosis, independent of conventional metabolic pathways.

Background/objectives: This study builds on previous findings from mouse models, which showed that maternal overnutrition induced by a high-fat diet (HFD) promotes metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) in offspring, linked to global DNA hypermethylation. We explored whether epigenetic modulation with 5-Aza-CdR, a DNA methylation inhibitor, could prevent MAFLD in offspring exposed to maternal overnutrition.
Methods: The offspring mice from dams of maternal overnutrition were fed either a chow diet or a high-fat diet (HFD) for 10 weeks.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is marked by impaired cognitive functions, particularly in learning and memory, owing to complex and diverse mechanisms. Methionine restriction (MR) has been found to exert a mitigating effect on brain oxidative stress to improve AD. However, the bidirectional crosstalk between the gut and brain through which MR enhances learning and memory in AD, as well as the effects of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) from MR mice on AD mice, remains underexplored.
