Keloids are characterized by excessive growth of fibrous tissue resulting from abnormal wound-healing processes. They may lead to functional impairments, aesthetic deformities, pruritus, and a decreased quality of life. Various therapies, including intralesional corticosteroid injections, cryotherapy, laser therapy, surgical excision, and radiotherapy, have been used to manage keloids, but the recurrence rates remain high.

Some studies have confirmed that pathogens can cause infection through bacterial cultures on the surface of infectious keloids. However, further exploration of the comparison between infectious and non-infectious keloids and the bacterial flora of infectious foci is lacking. To investigate the differential flora of purulent secretions on the surface of infectious keloids compared to non-infectious keloids and to determine the microbial composition within the infectious foci.

Background: Keloids are growing scars that arise from injury to the reticular dermis and subsequent chronic local inflammation. The latter may be promoted by vascular hyperpermeability, which permits the ingress of chronic inflammatory cells/factors. Cutaneous capillaries consist of endothelial cells that generate, and are anchored by, a vascular basement membrane (VBM).
