Statistical regression analysis of functional and shape data.

We develop a multivariate regression model when responses or predictors are on nonlinear manifolds, rather than on Euclidean spaces. The nonlinear constraint makes the problem challenging and needs to be studied carefully. By performing principal component analysis (PCA) on tangent space of manifold, we use principal directions instead in the model. Then, the ordinary regression tools can be utilized. We apply the framework to both shape data (ozone hole contours) and functional data (spectrums of absorbance of meat in Tecator dataset). Specifically, we adopt the square-root velocity function representation and parametrization-invariant metric. Experimental results have shown that we can not only perform powerful regression analysis on the non-Euclidean data but also achieve high prediction accuracy by the constructed model.

Characterization and Detection Strategy Exploration in Cryptogenic Hepatocellular Carcinoma: Insights From a Super-Aged Region in Japan.

Cancer Med

January 2025

Division of Gastroenterology and Nephrology, Department of Multidisciplinary Internal Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Tottori University, Yonago, Japan.

Background And Aim: In recent years, there has been a rise in cryptogenic hepatocellular carcinoma (c-HCC) cases in Japan, posing a detection challenge due to an unknown etiology. This study aims to enhance diagnostic strategies for c-HCC by analyzing its characteristics and exploring current opportunities for detection.

Methods: A retrospective study was conducted from April 2012 to March 2022, enrolling 372 newly diagnosed hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients.

Maternal Incarceration and Health Risk Behaviors Among Adolescents: A Latent Class Analysis.

January 2025

Diana R. Garland School of Social Work, Baylor University, Houston, TX, USA.

Most studies on the impact of maternal incarceration on adolescent health risk behaviors have focused on singular, separated behaviors, even though these behaviors often cluster and co-occur. This study used the FFCWS dataset to examine the association between maternal incarceration and the aggregation of health risk behaviors among adolescents. Latent class analysis suggested the four-class model had the optimal model fit.

Aim: To examine the adaptive behaviour profiles of children with monogenic neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) to determine whether syndrome-specific or transdiagnostic approaches provide a better understanding of the adaptive behavioural phenotypes of these NDDs.

Method: This cross-sectional study included parents and caregivers of 243 (48% female) individuals (age range = 1-25 years; mean = 8 years 10 months, SD = 5 years 8 months) with genetically confirmed monogenic NDDs (CDK13, DYRK1A, FOXP2, KAT6A, KANSL1, SETBP1, BRPF1, and DDX3X). Parents and caregivers completed the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, Third Edition to assess communication, daily living, socialization, and motor skills.

Background: While concomitant opioid and benzodiazepine use is discouraged due to an increased risk of sedation/overdose, the extent of perioperative opioid utilization in hand surgery patients already using benzodiazepines is unknown.

Methods: Using an administrative claims database, we identified adults undergoing carpal tunnel, DeQuervain, or trigger finger release, palmar fasciectomies, ganglion/mucoid cyst removals, and hand/wrist soft tissue mass excisions from 2011 to 2021. We identified opioid-naive patients with a benzodiazepine prescription within 90 days before surgery.

Impact of surgical specialization on long-term survival after emergent colon cancer resections.

Scand J Surg

January 2025

Department of Surgery, Helsingborg Hospital, Clinical Sciences Lund, Lund University, Lund, Sweden.

Background: The impact of surgical specialization on long-term survival in patients undergoing emergent colon cancer resections remains unclear.

Method: A retrospective analysis was conducted on all patients who underwent emergent colon cancer resections at a secondary care hospital between 2010 and 2020. The most senior surgeon performing the procedures was classified as colorectal surgeon (CS) or non-colorectal surgeon (NCS).
