are filamentous cyanobacteria of key interest due to their ability to fix carbon and nitrogen within an oligotrophic marine environment. Their blooms consist of a dynamic assemblage of subpopulations and colony morphologies that are hypothesized to occupy unique niches. Here, we assessed the poorly studied diversity of in the Red Sea, based on metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) and gene-based phylotyping. We assembled four non-redundant MAGs from morphologically distinct colonies (tufts, dense and thin puffs). (puffs) and (tufts) were the dominant species within these morphotypes. While subspecies diversity is present for both and , a single genotype comprised both thin and dense puff morphotypes, and we hypothesize that this phenotypic variation is likely attributed to gene regulation. Additionally, we found the rare non-diazotrophic clade IV and V genotypes, related to and , respectively that likely occurred as single filaments. The gene phylogeny further indicated that the genotype in clade IV could represent the species . Importantly, we show the presence of paralogs in , where two copies of the gene were present within genomes. This may lead to the overestimation of diversity as one of the copies misidentified as . Taken together, our results highlight the importance of re-assessing taxonomy while showing the ability of genomics to capture the complex diversity and distribution of populations.

Bats are reservoir hosts for numerous well-known zoonotic viruses, but their broader virus-hosting capacities remain understudied. are an order of enteric viruses known to cause disease across a wide range of mammalian hosts, including Hepatitis A in humans and foot-and-mouth disease in ungulates. Host-switching and recombination drive the diversification of worldwide.

Rift Valley Fever is endemic in Sudan, with a notable outbreak declared in 2019, affecting multiple states. In this study, we examine the Red Sea State, Sudan's experience in applying the One Health approach, to contain Red-Sea RVF outbreak. A retrospective analysis of national and sub-national data and a review of literature were conducted to assess the application of One Health response and to derive lessons learned.

Background: The observed growth variability of different aquaculture species in captivity hinders its large-scale production. For the sandfish Holothuria scabra, a tropical sea cucumber species, there is a scarcity of information on its intestinal microbiota in relation to host growth, which could provide insights into the processes that affect growth and identify microorganisms with probiotic or biochemical potential that could improve current production strategies. To address this gap, this study used 16 S rRNA amplicon sequencing to characterize differences in gut and fecal microbiota among large and small juveniles reared in floating ocean nurseries.

Humans are exposed to toxic methylmercury mainly by consuming marine fish, in particular top predator species like billfishes or tunas. In seafood risk assessments, mercury is assumed to be mostly present as organic methylmercury in predatory fishes; yet high percentages of inorganic mercury were recently reported in marlins, suggesting markedly different methylmercury metabolism across species. We quantified total mercury and methylmercury concentrations in muscle of four billfish species from the Indian and the Pacific oceans to address this knowledge gap.
