Purpose: To report a case of protein C deficiency with paracentral acute middle maculopathy (PAMM) and nonischemic central retinal vein obstruction (NI-CRVO). . A previously healthy twenty-one-year-old male was referred with sudden-onset, painless, unilateral paracentral scotomata in the right eye for a week. His uncorrected visual acuity was 20/20 in both eyes. In fundus examination of the right eye, mild venous tortuosity, retinal hemorrhages, and a gray-white opacity in the papillomacular bundle were observed. In the macular spectral-domain optical coherence tomography images, a hyperreflective band was noticed at the level of the inner nuclear layer, indicating PAMM. Fundus appearance and fluorescein angiography findings indicated NI-CRVO diagnosis made. The systemic and laboratory evaluations disclosed a protein C deficiency.

Conclusion: In this report, in a healthy young male, combined PAMM and NI-CRVO showed to be the cause of blurred vision in the setting of protein C deficiency.

The effects of estrogen depletion in female rats: differential influences on somato-motor and sensory cortices.

Biogerontology

Department of Anatomy, College of Medicine, Tzu Chi University, No. 701, Section 3, Zhongyang Rd., Hualien, 970374, Taiwan.

Aging women experience a significant decline of ovarian hormones, particularly estrogen, following menopause, and become susceptible to cognitive and psychomotor deficits. Although the effects of estrogen depletion had been documented in the prefrontal and somatosensory cortices, its impact on somatomotor cortex, a region crucial for motor and cognitive functions, remains unclear. To explore this, we ovariectomized young adult female rats and fed subsequently with phytoestrogen-free diet and studied the effects of estrogen depletion on the somato-sensory and motor cortices.

Background: Iron deficiency (ID) is currently defined as a serum ferritin level <100 or 100 to 299 ng/mL with transferrin saturation (TSAT) <20%. Serum ferritin and TSAT are currently used to define absolute and functional ID. However, individual markers of iron metabolism may be more informative than current arbitrary definitions of ID.

Background: The application of nitrogen (N) fertilizer to alfalfa ( L.) has received little attention due to the ability of this plant to fix N. However, N deficiency stress is often observed in marginal lands of China, especially in saline-alkali soils.

Background: Thoracic tumors characterized by a deficiency in SMARCA4 are highly aggressive and linked to a poor prognosis. This retrospective study explores the efficacy and safety of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in combination with chemotherapy for SMARCA4-deficient undifferentiated tumors (SMARCA4-dUT) and SMARCA4-deficient non-small cell lung cancer (SMARCA4-dNSCLC).

Methods: A cohort of 59 individuals was analyzed, including 35 patients with SMARCA4-dUT and 24 with SMARCA4-dNSCLC.

Center for Reproductive Medicine, Henan Key Laboratory of Reproduction and Genetics, The First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University, Zhengzhou, China.

Background: The aim of the present study was to investigate the impact of serum VD status on IVF outcomes and to observe the effect of VD deficiency on the expression of the endometrial receptivity marker HOXA10.

Materials And Methods: Patients undergoing their first IVF cycles were divided into 3 groups according to VD levels (deficient: <20 ng/mL, insufficient: 20-29.9 ng/mL), and replete ≥30 ng/mL).
