Fertility preservation for transgender individuals.

Charing Cross Gender Identity Clinic, Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust, London, UK.

Published: April 2022

Transgender people are just as able to be good parents as anyone else. The treatment involved in addressing their gender dysphoria usually removes their natural fertility and if they want to preserve their fertility, they will need gamete storage. The technology needed to provide gamete storage for transfolk is not any different from anyone else but the clinic setup, human interactions and the approach used need to be sensitive and require everyone in the clinic to understand the issues and behave accordingly if high-quality service is to be provided.

Permanent preservation of genetic resources may be indispensable for the future of humanity. This requires liquid nitrogen, as is the case for preserving animal sperm. However, this technique is expensive and poses a risk of irrecoverable sample loss on non-replenishment of liquid nitrogen in case of natural disasters.

Biomedical research on advanced cryopreservation has spillover effects on innovation in the food and agricultural sector. Advanced biopreservation technology has three key domains of impact in the food system: (1) improving efficiencies in storage and utilization of gametes and organoids for plant and animal breeding; (2) isochoric methods for preservation of fresh food products; and (3) in biorepositories for storage of genetic resources for agriculturally significant plants and livestock species.

Divergence in gametic traits can play a key role in reproductive isolation. Lifjeld et al. (2024) examined the evolution of sperm length in pairs of songbird populations at various stages along the speciation continuum.

In the poultry industry, every chick or poult produced has high economic value; therefore, selection of male breeders capable of transmitting desirable traits to their offspring has an important role in fertility and hatching success. Following either natural mating or artificial insemination, sperm must go through a sequence of steps to fertilize the egg: 1. Go from the site of deposition (vagina) to the Sperm Storage Tubules (SST); 2.

Article Synopsis
  • Cryopreservation is a method used for long-term storage of goat semen, which helps in the exchange of genetic material among livestock but often reduces sperm quality.
  • The study explores how Epimedium polysaccharide (EPS) can improve the quality of cryopreserved goat sperm by comparing samples treated with various concentrations of EPS to control samples without it.
  • Results showed that 3 mg/mL of EPS significantly enhanced sperm motility, membrane integrity, and antioxidant enzyme activities, indicating it as the optimal concentration for improving sperm quality after freezing.
