We study the question of universality in the two-dimensional spin-1 Baxter-Wu model in the presence of a crystal field Δ. We employ extensive numerical simulations of two types, providing us with complementary results: Wang-Landau sampling at fixed values of Δ and a parallelized variant of the multicanonical approach performed at constant temperature T. A detailed finite-size scaling analysis in the regime of second-order phase transitions in the (Δ,T) phase diagram indicates that the transition belongs to the universality class of the four-state Potts model. Previous controversies with respect to the nature of the transition are discussed and attributed to the presence of strong finite-size effects, especially as one approaches the pentacritical point of the model.

Black phosphorus (BP), a promising two-dimensional material, faces significant challenges for its applications due to its instability in air and water. Herein, molecular dynamics simulations reveal that a self-assembled ferrocene (FeCp) molecular layer can form on BP surfaces and remain stable in aqueous environments, predicting its effectiveness for passivation. This theoretical finding is corroborated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and optical microscopy observations.

In this Letter, we present a novel, to the best of our knowledge, approach for recovering objects directly from the Fraunhofer diffraction integral, where the diffraction field of an object is approximated by the Fourier transform of this object augmented by an additional phase factor. This phase factor at the observation plane is universal for the diffraction fields generated by objects located at the same plane and illuminated by the same monochromatic plane wave. It can be first extracted from dividing the Fraunhofer diffraction field by the Fourier transform of an object reference.

A Cordial Introduction to Double Scaled SYK.

Rep Prog Phys

SISSA, via Bonomea 265, 34136 Trieste, Trieste, 34136, ITALY.

We review recent progress regarding the double scaled Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model and other p-local quantum mechanical random Hamiltonians. These models exhibit an expansion using chord diagrams, which can be solved by combinatorial methods. We describe exact results in these models, including their spectrum, correlation functions, and Lyapunov exponent.

Gliomas are a group of primary brain tumors characterized by their aggressive nature and resistance to treatment. Infiltration of surrounding normal tissues limits surgical approaches, wide inter- and intratumor heterogeneity hinders the development of universal therapeutics, and the presence of the blood-brain barrier reduces the efficiency of their delivery. As a result, patients diagnosed with gliomas often face a poor prognosis and low survival rates.

Many-Body Systems with Spurious Modular Commutators.

Phys Rev Lett

December 2024

Kadanoff Center for Theoretical Physics, University of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois 60637, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • A proposed relationship exists between the chiral central charge of gapped, two-dimensional quantum systems and a bulk entanglement measure called the modular commutator.
  • Evidence supports this relation, but it is shown in this study that it is not universal across all systems.
  • The authors present examples of lattice systems with a zero chiral central charge that still produce nonzero "spurious" modular commutator values, demonstrating this discrepancy in both one- and two-dimensional setups.
