A basic question in network community detection is how modular a given network is. This is usually addressed by evaluating the quality of partitions detected in the network. The Girvan-Newman (GN) modularity function is the standard way to make this assessment, but it has a number of drawbacks. Most importantly, it is not clearly interpretable, given that the measure can take relatively large values on partitions of random networks without communities. Here we propose a measure based on the concept of robustness: modularity is the probability to find trivial partitions when the structure of the network is randomly perturbed. This concept can be implemented for any clustering algorithm capable of telling when a group structure is absent. Tests on artificial and real graphs reveal that robustness modularity can be used to assess and compare the strength of the community structure of different networks. We also introduce two other quality functions: modularity difference, a suitably normalized version of the GN modularity, and information modularity, a measure of distance based on information compression. Both measures are strongly correlated with robustness modularity, but have lower time complexity, so they could be used on networks whose size makes the calculation of robustness modularity too costly.

Molecular frameworks have recently shown a great potential in atmospheric water harvesting, in which the water release at low temperatures is challenging. Anion-organic frameworks based on anion-coordination chemistry are presented herein to meet this challenge. These frameworks are prepared as tubular single crystals in pure water from the in-situ protonation and crystallization of pyridine-terminated triphenylamine derivatives with hydrochloric or hydrobromic acid.

Theory predicts that spatial modular networks contain the propagation of local disturbances, but field experimental tests of this hypothesis are lacking. We combined a field experiment with a metacommunity model to assess the role of modularity in buffering the spatial spread of algal turfs in three replicated canopy-dominated macroalgal networks. Experimental networks included three modules where plots with intact canopy cover (nodes) were connected through canopy-thinned corridors.

Modern medicinal chemists are targeting more complex molecules to address challenging biological targets, which leads to synthesizing structures with higher sp character (Fsp) to enhance specificity as well as physiochemical properties. Although traditional flat, high-fraction sp molecules, such as pyridine, can be decorated through electrophilic aromatic substitution and palladium (Pd)-based cross-couplings, general strategies to derivatize three-dimensional (3D) saturated molecules are far less developed. In this work, we present an approach for the rapid, modular, enantiospecific, and diastereoselective functionalization of piperidine (saturated analog of pyridine), combining robust biocatalytic carbon-hydrogen oxidation with radical cross-coupling.

Pollination syndromes are a key component of flowering plant diversification, prompting questions about the architecture of single traits and genetic coordination among traits. Here, we investigate the genetics of extreme floral divergence between naturally hybridizing monkeyflowers, Mimulus parishii (self-pollinated) and M. cardinalis (hummingbird-pollinated).

As part of our research for microcontroller software support, we have developed a modular framework that utilizes previously unimplemented architectural principles for developing applications on microcontrollers. These principles are still a privilege of enterprise and server applications. The paper describes the benefits of a new architectural approach to developing applications on microcontrollers and describes the most common application scenarios along with examples of IoT application development using a framework with design pattern architecture and SOLID principles.
