Background: Early pneumonia is an independent risk factor for 1-y mortality after lung transplantation (LTx). Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the most common isolate in early pneumonia and is also associated with an increased risk of chronic lung allograft dysfunction. The aim of our study was to evaluate the efficacy of secondary prophylaxis with inhaled colistin (IC) in preventing the recurrence of P aeruginosa or extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacterales (ESBL-PE) pneumonia in the postoperative period in the intensive care unit after LTx.

Methods: We conducted a before-and-after retrospective cohort study by including all patients who underwent LTx between January 2015 and December 2020 in our center. Secondary prophylaxis with IC was instituted in January 2018 (observation period from January 2015 to December 2017, intervention period from January 2018 to December 2020).

Results: A total of 271 lung transplants were included (125 in the observation period and 146 in the intervention period). The patients were predominately male (64.2%) with a median age of 57 y and received double LTx (67.9%) for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease/emphysema (36.2%) or interstitial lung disease (48.3%). The proportion of patients who experienced at least 1 recurrence of P aeruginosa or ESBL-PE pneumonia was significantly lower in the intervention period than in the observation period (0.7% versus 7.2%, P = 0.007).

Conclusions: Our study suggests a potential benefit of secondary prophylaxis with IC to prevent the recurrence of P aeruginosa or ESBL-PE pneumonia in the intensive care unit after LTx.

The emergence of new variants and diverse vaccination regimens have raised uncertainty about vaccine effectiveness against SARS-CoV-2. This study aims to investigate the impact of Omicron primo-/reinfection and primary vaccination schedules on the immunogenicity of an mRNA-based booster dose over a six-month period. We conducted a prospective cohort study to assess the durability and level of antibodies of 678 healthcare workers fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Background/objectives: This protocol describes a study to investigate the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a novel Teaching Kitchen Multisite Trial (TK-MT) for adults with cardiometabolic abnormalities. The TK-MT protocol describes a hybrid lifestyle intervention combining in-person and virtual instruction in culinary skills, nutrition education, movement, and mindfulness with community support and behavior change strategies. This 18-month-long randomized controlled trial aims to evaluate the feasibility of implementing a 12-month, 24 class program, assess preliminary study efficacy, and identify barriers and facilitators to implementation.

This study aimed to examine the impact of early postoperative physical therapy combined with an educational program on wound recurrence and quality of life in patients with foot ulcers. Forty-eight postoperative patients with diabetic foot ulcers were randomly assigned to either an intervention group, which received both physical therapy and an educational program ( = 25), or a control group, which received physical therapy only ( = 23). Each intervention was initiated on the day after surgery in both groups.

: Although breast surgery has undergone a drastic de-escalation in recent decades, axillary dissection is still indicated in some selected cases. Unfortunately, in 3-85% of cases, complications such as seroma formation occur, highlighting the need for more accurate hemostasis systems. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of absorbable polysaccharide hemostatic such as Haemocer in preventing postoperative seroma.

represent a common invasive infection etiological agent, whose potential carbapenem-resistance and hypermucoviscosity complicate the patient's management. Infection development often derives from gastrointestinal colonization; thus, it is fundamental to monitor asymptomatic colonization through surveillance protocols, especially for intensive care and immunocompromised patients. We described a six-month routine screening protocol from the Policlinico of Catania (Italy), while blood samples were collected from the same patients only in cases of a systemic infection suspicion.
