New tools for Aedes control: mass trapping.

Aedes aegypti, the main vector of dengue, chikungunya, and Zika viruses uses artificial containers around homes to undergo immature development, making household-level detection and control extremely difficult in large urban areas. Mass trapping is an emerging methodology to control container-Aedes species such as Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus because effective traps for adult stages of these mosquitoes were developed recently. There are three main approaches to mass-trapping these mosquitoes: 1) Pull (attract/kill), 2) push (repel)-pull (attract/kill), and 3) pull (attract/contaminate/infect)-push (fly away). Effective mass-trapping depends on trap quality (capture efficiency, sturdiness, frequency of servicing), trap density and areal coverage, community involvement, and safety. Recent studies showed that Ae. aegypti populations can be sustainably controlled by mass trapping, although more area-wide studies showing effectiveness at preventing disease are needed for all trapping systems. Cost-effectiveness studies are needed for all emerging Aedes control approaches.

Large herbivores are in decline in much of the world, including sub-Saharan Africa, and true apex carnivores like the lion () decline in parallel with their prey. As a consequence, competitively subordinate carnivores like the African wild dog () are simultaneously experiencing a costly reduction in resources and a beneficial reduction in dominant competitors. The net effect is not intuitively obvious, but wild dogs' density, survival, and reproduction are all low in areas that are strongly affected by prey depletion.

The gas (or plastron) trapped between micro/nano-scale surface textures, such as that on superhydrophobic surfaces, is crucial for many engineering applications, including drag reduction, heat and mass transfer enhancement, anti-biofouling, anti-icing, and self-cleaning. However, the longevity of the plastron is significantly affected by gas diffusion, a process where gas molecules slowly diffuse into the ambient liquid. In this work, we demonstrated that plastron longevity could be extended using a gas-soluble and gas-permeable polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surface.

We introduce here a novel approach, termed time-segmented acquisition (Seg), to enhance the identification of peptides and proteins in trapped ion mobility spectrometry (TIMS)-time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometry. Our method exploits the positive correlation between ion mobility values and reversed-phase liquid chromatography (LC) retention time to improve ion separation and resolution. By dividing the LC retention time into multiple segments and applying a segment-specific narrower ion mobility range within the TIMS tunnel, we achieved better separation and higher resolution of ion mobility.
