Protein contact maps capture coevolutionary interactions between amino acid residue pairs that are spatially within certain proximity threshold. Predicted contact maps are used in many protein related problems that include drug design, protein design, protein function prediction, and protein structure prediction. Contact map prediction has achieved significant progress lately but still further challenges remain with prediction of contacts between residues that are separated in the amino acid residue sequence by large numbers of other residues. In this paper, with experimental results on 5 standard benchmark datasets that include membrane proteins, we show that contact map prediction could be significantly enhanced by using ensembles of various state-of-the-art short distance predictors and then by converting predicted distances into contact probabilities. Our program along with its data is available from https://gitlab.com/mahnewton/ecp.

Eukaryotic Initiation Factor 4 (eIF4) is a group of factors that activates mRNA for translation and recruit 43S preinitiation complex (PIC) to the mRNA 5' end, forming the 48S PIC. The eIF4 factors include mRNA 5' cap-binding protein eIF4E, ATP-dependent RNA helicase eIF4A, and scaffold protein eIF4G, which anchors eIF4A and eIF4E. Another eIF4 factor, eIF4B, stimulates the RNA helicase activity of eIF4A and facilitates mRNA recruitment.

Background: Leptospirosis is an acute zoonotic disease caused by pathogenic , primarily transmitted to humans through contact with water or soil contaminated by the bacteria. It is globally distributed, with heightened prevalence in tropical regions. While prior studies have examined the pathophysiology, epidemiology, and risk factors of leptospirosis, few have explored trends and emerging topics in the field.

Background: There is growing interest in developing sensing solutions for remote health monitoring to support the safety and independence of older adults. To ensure these technologies are practical and relevant, people-centred design is essential. This study aims to explore the involvement of various stakeholders across different developmental stages to inform the design and assess the capabilities of unobtrusive sensing solutions being developed as part of the Advanced Care Research Centre (ACRC), Edinburgh, UK.

Flipons and the origin of the genetic code.

This paper is focused on the origins of the contemporary genetic code. A novel explanation is proposed for how the mapping of nucleotides in DNA to amino acids in proteins arose that derives from repeat nucleotide sequences able to form alternative nucleic acid structures (ANS), such as the unusual left-handed Z-DNA, triplex, G-quadruplex and I-motif conformations. The scheme identifies sequence-specific contacts that map ANS repeats to dipeptide polymers (DPS).
