Background: The objective of the current study is to evaluate the phenotypic and molecular characterization of ESBL/AmpC- and carbapenemase-producing K. pneumoniae isolates in Iran.
Methods: From October 2018 until the end of April 2020, different clinical samples were collected and K. pneumoniae isolates were identified using conventional biochemical tests and PCR assay. Antibiotic susceptibility pattern was determined using the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method. Modified Hedge Test (MHT) was applied to the identification of carbapenemase-producing K. pneumoniae. ESBL and AmpC-producing K. pneumoniae were detected using Double Disc Test (DDT) and Disc Potentiation Test (DPT), respectively. The presence of carbapenemase, ESBL, and AmpC encoding genes was screened by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) assay.
Results: A total of 100 K. pneumoniae isolates were collected. K. pneumoniae isolates had the highest resistance rate to cefazolin (66%) and cefotaxime (66%). Meropenem and amikacin with sensitivity rates of 76% and 69% were the most effective antimicrobial agents on K. pneumoniae isolates. It was found that 12 (12%), 27 (27%), and 9 (9%) K. pneumoniae isolates were positive in MHT, DDT, and DPT tests, respectively. Among the carbapenemase-encoding genes, bla (24%) and bla (13%) genes had the highest frequency, while bla and bla genes were not detected among K. pneumoniae isolates. bla (48%) and bla (8%) genes had the highest frequency among ESBL and AmpC β-lactamase-encoding genes, respectively.
Conclusions: It is vital to adopt effective control strategies for K. pneumoniae infections and ensure rapid identification of antibiotic resistance profile.

Introduction: Antimicrobial resistance remains a global threat with increasing morbidity and mortality rates. The aim of this study was to identify the antimicrobial resistance trends among ESKAPE pathogens (Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter spp.) isolated from clinical samples at a Health Practice and Research Hospital over five years.

Objective: The EU global health priorities focus on ensuring better health and well-being for people throughout their lives as well as on reducing inequalities between countries. The COVID-19 pandemic can be understood as a set of several events that directly or indirectly affected the mental health of people around the world. The aim of this study was to identify the main groupings of co-occurrence of all keywords related to the main keywords "COVID-19" and "mental health" acquired through search in the Scopus database using the VOSviewer tool.

Objectives: The aim of this study was the evaluation of a group of patients treated at the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology of Locomotory Apparatus at Luis Pasteur University Hospital in Košice for septic arthritis in relation to risk factors and chronic diseases and its microbial aetiologic profile.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of patients including all episodes of septic arthritis from March 2013 to August 2022. The occurrence of chronic diseases, risk factors and its microbiological profile were investigated.

Reducing the time required for the detection of bacteria in blood samples is a critical area of investigation in the field of clinical diagnosis. Positive blood culture samples often require a plate culture stage due to the interference of blood cells and proteins, which can result in significant delays before the isolation of single colonies suitable for matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) analysis. In this study, we developed a non-specific enrichment strategy based on SiO-encapsulated FeO nanoparticles combined with MALDI-TOF MS for direct identification of bacteria from aqueous environments or positive blood culture samples.

Background: Hospital-acquired bloodstream infections (BSI) are associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. This study was conducted to describe the outcomes and the prognosis of hospital-acquired BSI in the Critical Care Unit, Hospital Pakar Universiti Sains Malaysia (HPUSM), as well as to identify associated factors of treatment failure and mortality at 28 days.
Methods: This prospective cohort study was conducted in the Critical Care Unit of HPUSM from September 2019 to March 2021.
