Background:  Adjacent segment disease (ASD) is a degenerative condition at the segment adjacent to a previously fused segment. Potential risk factors for ASD, such as posterior ligamentous complex (PLC) integrity between the upper instrumented vertebra (UIV) and the first unfused segment (UIV+1), have not been addressed. The objective of this study is to assess the PLC integrity between the UIV and UIV+1 following posterior lumbar decompression and fusion (PLDF).

Hydrogen sulfide (HS) is an endogenous gasotransmitter with cardioprotective and antiviral effects. In this work, new cysteine-selective nucleoside-HS-donor hybrid molecules were prepared by conjugating nucleoside biomolecules with a thiol-activatable dithioacetyl group. 5'-Dithioacetate derivatives were synthesized from the canonical nucleosides (uridine, adenosine, cytidine, guanosine and thymidine), and the putative 5'-thio metabolites were also produced from uridine and adenosine.

High-consistency modification of cellulose fibers: Resource-efficient introduction of cationic charges, and their effect on fiber and nanofibril properties.

Department of Fibre and Polymer Technology, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, SE-10044 Stockholm, Sweden; FibRe Center for Lignocellulose-based Thermoplastics, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, SE-100 44 Stockholm, Sweden. Electronic address:

Quaternized cellulose fibers and cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) are attractive candidates for the development of new renewable and biodegradable materials. However, the etherification reaction, through which functionalization is commonly achieved, provides low efficiencies, limiting industrial interest in the modification. This work primarily aims to increase the efficiency for the quaternization of cellulosic fibers while keeping the fiber-structure intact.

Background: Meteorin-like (Metrnl) is a newly identified secreted protein that plays important roles in metabolic and inflammation-related diseases. Our study aimed to evaluate serum Metrnl levels and establish their relationship with vascular calcification (VC) in hemodialysis (HD) patients.

Methods: In total, 313 HD patients and 41 healthy individuals, as controls, were included.

Background: As a state of metabolic and nutritional derangements, protein-energy wasting (PEW) is highly prevalent and associated with increased morbidity and mortality in hemodialysis patients. Fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF-23) and Klotho have been proven to contribute to chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD) in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Previous evidence suggested that FGF-23 and Klotho may also contribute to the malnutritional status among these patients; however, the inter-relationship between the FGF-23-Klotho axis and PEW remains unclear.
