The binder is an indispensable battery component that maintains the integrity of the electrode. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is most commonly used as a binder in rechargeable batteries; however, it is associated with the toxic and expensive N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone organic solvent. Here, through the cross-linking of sodium alginate (SA) with metal cations, a high-performance hydrogel binder is developed that maintains the stability of MnO cathodes in an aqueous electrolyte. Owing to the strong adhesion, high hydrophilicity, and good mechanical stability resulting from the strong bonding of Ca with SA, a commercial microsized MnO cathode with a Ca-SA binder delivered a capacity above 300 mAh/g at 1 C, which was larger than those of Mn-SA and Zn-SA (∼200 mAh/g) and PVDF (∼150 mAh/g) binders, and a capacity of 250 mAh/g at 3 C for over 200 cycles. These encouraging results could unlock the enormous potential of aqueous binders for practical applications in aqueous batteries.

Skin wound healing is often hindered by disrupted mitochondrial homeostasis and imbalanced macrophage glucose metabolism, posing a critical challenge to improve patient outcomes. Developing new wound healing dressings capable of effectively regulating macrophage immune-metabolic functions remains a pressing issue. Herein, a highly adhesive polyethylene glycol (PEG) hydrogel loaded with the Janus kinase 1 (JAK1) inhibitor Filgotinib (Fil@GEL) is prepared to modulate macrophage metabolic reprogramming and restore normal mitochondrial function.

Article Synopsis
  • * The researchers used a combination of Ga-MOC and Ni-ethylenediamine complex as a binder to fine-tune the structural evolution of their co-assembled system by adjusting the binder ratio.
  • * Findings show that altering the binder ratio affects the length and properties of the resulting nanostructures, leading to the formation of hydrogels that can turn into crystals autonomously, influenced by the interactions between the components.

As waste production increases and resources become limited, sewage sludge presents a valuable resource with potential beyond traditional land use and incineration. This review emphasizes exploring innovative non-fertilizer applications of sewage sludges and advocates for viewing wastewater treatment plants as sources of valuable feedstock and carbon sequestration. Innovative uses include integrating sewage sludge into construction materials such as asphalt pavements, geopolymer, cementitious composites, and masonry blocks.

Rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (RAZIBs) are attracting increasing attention due to their advantages in safety, cost, and energy density. However, the choice of electrode binders when using aqueous electrolytes faces many constraints, as nontoxic and low-cost hydrophilic binders, such as sodium alginate (SA), can lead to electrode damage due to excessive swelling in aqueous solution. Here, by employing double-network hydrogel electrolytes formed by poly(vinyl alcohol) and alginate, the content and activity of water molecules at the electrode-electrolyte interface are reduced, and the mechanical stability of the electrode is reinforced, thereby affording reliable protection to the cathode bonded with SA.

The current process for creating zirconia reconstructions for teeth is time-consuming, expensive, and results in tool wear and raw material waste. An alternative method, near-net shape additive manufacturing capable of producing samples with color gradient is presented as an innovative and more efficient solution. A low-cost robocasting system, which enabled the co-extrusion of two different ceramic inks, was designed and developed.
