We introduce a method to extract the photoacoustic (PA) signal from a contrast reduction of the interference spectrum acquired by spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SDOCT). This all-optical detection is achieved in a noncontact manner directly on the water surface covered on the sample by using its specular reflection. During SDOCT exposure, the phase of the interference spectrum keeps shaking according to the water surface vibration induced by PA excitation. This results in an interference contrast reduction which is quantified by a fast Fourier transform (FFT) for PA imaging. A tungsten filament, asparagus fern leaf, and mouse auricle are imaged to demonstrate the method.

Background: Immunomagnetic separation is essential for screening pathogenic bacteria to prevent food poisoning. However, free immunomagnetic nanobeads (IMNBs) coexist with IMNB-bacteria conjugates (IBCs) after traditional immunomagnetic separation resulting in the infeasibility for IMNBs on IBCs to further act as signal label in bacterial detection. Although we have demonstrated that magnetophoretic separation at a high flowrate could separate IBCs from IMNBs, partial IMNBs were still found with IBCs due to chaotic flows and resulted in inevitable interferences.

Introduction: Fetal hemoglobin (HbF) is known to cause method-specific interference in glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) measurement. Data on HbF interference, however, is currently either lacking for some platforms (eg, the Abbott Core Laboratory Alinity c and Beckman Coulter AU5800) or available only for HbF levels lower than the maximum claimed by the manufacturer (eg, Bio-Rad D-100).
Methods: We examined the effect of HbF interference on 7 HbA1c platforms using a series of spiked adult whole blood samples with increasing HbF levels (0% to 35%) and either low (approximately 5%) or high (approximately 9%) HbA1c levels, using isotope dilution mass spectrometry as a reference measurement procedure.
