With more and more aspects of modern life and scientific tools becoming digitized, the amount of data being generated is growing exponentially. Fast and efficient statistical processing, such as identifying correlations in big datasets, is therefore becoming increasingly important, and this, on account of the various compute bottlenecks in modern digital machines, has necessitated new computational paradigms. Here, we demonstrate one such novel paradigm, via the development of an integrated phase-change photonics engine. The computational memory engine exploits the accumulative property of GeSbTe phase-change cells and wavelength division multiplexing property of optics in delivering fully parallelized and colocated temporal correlation detection computations. We investigate this property and present an experimental demonstration of identifying real-time correlations in data streams on the social media platform Twitter and high-traffic computing nodes in data centers. Our results demonstrate the use case of high-speed integrated photonics in accelerating statistical analysis methods.

Development of Molecularly Imprinted Photonic Crystals Sensor for High-Sensitivity, Rapid Detection of Sulfamethazine in Food Samples.

Polymers (Basel)

January 2025

Shandong Key Laboratory of Healthy Food Resources Exploration and Creation, School of Food Science and Engineering, Qilu University of Technology (Shandong Academy of Sciences), Jinan 250353, China.

As a veterinary drug, sulfamethazine is frequently used to control animal diseases. In this study, a novel molecularly imprinted photonic crystal sensor for the fast visual detection of sulfamethazine in milk and chicken has been developed. Under optimum preparation conditions, a molecularly imprinted, photonic crystal with an anti-opal structure and a clear bright color was prepared and characterized.

Integrated Spectral Sensitivity as Physics-Based Figure of Merit for Spectral Transducers in Optical Sensing.

The design of optical sensors aims at providing, among other things, the highest precision in the determination of the target measurand. Many sensor systems rely on a spectral transducer to map changes in the measurand into spectral shifts of a resonance peak in the reflection or transmission spectrum, which is measured by a readout device (e.g.

Photokinetics of Photothermal Reactions.

Photothermal reactions, involving both photochemical and thermal reaction steps, are the most abundant sequences in photochemistry. The derivation of their rate laws is standardized, but the integration of these rate laws has not yet been achieved. Indeed, the field still lacks integrated rate laws for the description of these reactions' behavior and/or identification of their reaction order.

Research on Envelope Profile of Lithium Niobate on Insulator Stepped-Mode Spot Size Converter.

Micromachines (Basel)

January 2025

School of Physics and Optoelectronic Engineering, Institute of Laser Engineering, Beijing University of Technology, Beijing 100124, China.

To enhance the end-face coupling efficiency of lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) chips, in conjunction with current device fabrication processes, a stepped spot size converter (SSC) based on a special outer envelope profile has been proposed and investigated. This stepped SSC can reduce the coupling loss between the LNOI waveguide and a normal single-mode optical fiber. First, the output waveguide of a mode converter was proposed and simulated, in which the mode field had the biggest overlapping integral factor with a single-mode fiber (MDF ≈ 9.

Radio photonic technologies have emerged as a promising solution for addressing microwave frequency synthesis challenges in current and future communication and sensing systems. One particularly effective approach is the optoelectronic oscillator (OEO), a simple and cost-effective electro-optical system. The OEO can generate microwave signals with low phase noise and high oscillation frequencies, often outperforming traditional electrical methods.
