Background: Kidney disease is common in patients with heart failure (HF). The Donadio equation combines plasma creatinine and bioimpedance vector analysis (BIVA) to estimate creatinine clearance. This study aimed to compare the Donadio formula to the Cockcroft-Gault (CG), Modification of Diet in Renal Disease Study (MDRD-4), and Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) equations in patients with HF.

Methods: We analysed data from 900 patients (mean age: 76 ± 10 years) with HF. All of them underwent clinical, laboratory, BIVA, and echocardiographic evaluations.

Results: Donadio equation overestimated eGFR as compared to CG and CKD-EPI formulas (+6.8 and +12 mL/min/1.73 m2, respectively) while computing similar results to MDRD-4 (overestimation: +0.1 mL/min/1.73 m2). According to the different formulas, the prevalence of renal insufficiency (eGFR< 30 ml/min/1.73 m2) in relation to the different formulas was as follows: 24% with Donadio, 21% with CG, 13% with MDRD-4, and 23% with CKD-EPI formulas. All the equations demonstrated a high precision rate (r>0.8 for all). There was a "good" agreement between the Donadio and CG/MDRD-4 formulas and "fair" with the CDK-EPI formula. The Donadio equation showed a high accuracy in predicting severe renal dysfunction (eGFR< 30 mL/min/1.73 m2) in patients with HF (AUC > 0.9), showing comparable performances to CG.

Conclusion: The Donadio formula provided an estimation of GFR comparable to MDRD-4 in HF patients, independently from acute or chronic HF conditions. The use of BIVA in HF patients may be adopted both for HF management and for evaluating kidney function.

The Association of Field Test Outcomes with Peak Oxygen Uptake in Patients with Cystic Fibrosis: A Systematic Review.

Int J Exerc Sci

November 2022

Laboratory of Pediatric Physical Activity, Infant Center, Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS), Porto Alegre, RS, BRAZIL.

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the association of field test outcomes with peak oxygen uptake (VOpeak) in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) and to describe the main prediction equations available. Data searches were performed in five databases (Pubmed, Embase, LILACs, Scopus and Web of Science) and also in the reference lists of articles included. The following inclusion criteria were used: studies including individuals with CF, presenting both a field test and a cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET), and describing a predictive equation or coefficient of correlation/determination.

Modeling heat transport in crystals and glasses from a unified lattice-dynamical approach.

Nat Commun

August 2019

SISSA - Scuola Internazionale Superiore di Studi Avanzati, Trieste, 34136, Italy.

We introduce a novel approach to model heat transport in solids, based on the Green-Kubo theory of linear response. It naturally bridges the Boltzmann kinetic approach in crystals and the Allen-Feldman model in glasses, leveraging interatomic force constants and normal-mode linewidths computed at mechanical equilibrium. At variance with molecular dynamics, our approach naturally and easily accounts for quantum mechanical effects in energy transport.

Introduction: The ESC-2018 guidelines suggest the use of Unattended automated office blood pressure (UAOBP) to avoid or at least reduce the white coat effect, even if do not support its use as preferred method.

Aim: To assess the pressure difference between UAOBP and Attended office blood pressure (AOBP) and to evaluate their correlations with target organ damage in hypertensive patients.

Methods: UAOBP and AOBP were taken in a cohort of 48 outpatients.

Prediction of peak oxygen uptake using the modified shuttle test in children and adolescents with cystic fibrosis.

Pediatr Pulmonol

April 2019

Laboratory of Pediatric Physical Activity, Centro Infant, Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS), Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

Background: Several tests may be used to assess exercise intolerance in cystic fibrosis (CF), including the gold standard cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) and the Modified Shuttle Test (MST).

Objective: To evaluate the use of the MST as a predictor of peak oxygen uptake (VO peak) and to compare VO peak and maximal heart rate (HRmax) obtained in both tests.

Methods: Cross-sectional study including individuals with CF aged between 6 and 20 years old.
