Analysis of the haemodynamic changes caused by surgical and transcatheter aortic valve replacements by means fluid-structure interaction simulations.

Comput Biol Med

January 2025

UCL Mechanical Engineering, University College London, UK; Ri.MED Foundation, Palermo, Italy; University of Palermo, Department of Engineering, Palermo, Italy. Electronic address:

Aortic valve replacements, both surgical and transcatheter, are nowadays widely employed treatments. Although clinically effective, these procedures are correlated with potentially severe clinical complications which can be associated with the non-physiological haemodynamics that they establish. In this work, the fluid dynamics changes produced by surgical and transcatheter aortic valve replacements are analysed and compared with an ideal healthy native valve configuration, employing advanced fluid-structure interaction (FSI) simulations.

Emergency shelters are multifunctional spaces that provide safe refuge, essential life protection, and rescue command for residents in case of urban disaster. These shelters constitute crucial components of urban public safety. This study, with Tianhe District in Guangzhou City as a case study, used data from emergency evacuation sites and other socio-economic sources to construct an evaluation system for spatial suitability evaluation and layout optimization of emergency shelters.

Exploring the Nutrition Care Journey of People Living With Obesity in Acute Care.

J Hum Nutr Diet

February 2025

Department of Nutrition, Dietetics and Food, School of Clinical Sciences, Monash University, Notting Hill, Victoria, Australia.

Background: Recent studies show a high prevalence in hospital populations and best practice evidence indicates that people living with obesity should receive dietetic advice. However, patients often do not receive this care in acute settings. Understanding the experiences of people living with obesity is crucial to designing successful strategies for management.

A constrained optimisation framework for parameter identification of the SIRD model.

Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences, The University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt University, Bayes Centre, Edinburgh, Scotland, UK; School of Mathematics, The University of Edinburgh, James Clerk Maxwell Building, Edinburgh, Scotland, UK. Electronic address:

We consider a numerical framework tailored to identifying optimal parameters in the context of modelling disease propagation. Our focus is on understanding the behaviour of optimisation algorithms for such problems, where the dynamics are described by a system of ordinary differential equations associated with the epidemiological SIRD model. Applying an optimise-then-discretise approach, we examine properties of the solution operator and determine existence of optimal parameters for the problem considered.

Acute Pancreatitis: An Update of Evidence-Based Management and Recent Trends in Treatment Strategies.

United European Gastroenterol J

January 2025

Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Amsterdam Gastroenterology Endocrinology Metabolism, Amsterdam UMC, Location University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Acute pancreatitis is a common gastrointestinal disease leading to hospitalisation. Recent advancements in its management have primarily focussed on the development of early phase medical interventions targeting inflammatory pathways, optimisation of supportive treatment (including fluid resuscitation, pain management and nutritional management), appropriate use of antibiotics, implementation of minimally invasive interventions for infected necrosis, and the necessity of follow-up for long-term complications. These advancements have significantly improved personalised management and overall outcomes of acute pancreatitis.
