The phenoxy-amino ligands 2-(((2-(diethylamino)ethyl)amino)methyl)phenol (L1) and 2-(((2-mercaptoethyl)amino)methyl)-phenol (L2) were studied as model chelating agents for liquid-liquid extraction of copper(II), zinc(II), cadmium(II), and lead(II) cations from water using dichloromethane-water biphasic system. The relative affinities of these chelating ligands for copper(II), zinc(II), cadmium(II), and lead(II) by liquid-liquid extraction were found to be in the order copper(II)> zinc(II) > cadmium(II) > lead(II). The ligands L1 and L2 showed binding efficiencies ranging from 78%-97% for copper(II), 75%-91% for zinc(II), 76%-92% for cadmium(II), and 59%-67% for lead(II). The extraction protocol was successfully applied to sewage effluent.

This study introduces a novel ion-imprinted polymer for the ultrasensitive detection of mercury(II) in water. The ion-imprinted polymer was synthesized via a simple bulk polymerization process using methacrylic acid as the functional monomer, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the cross-linker, morpholine-4-carbodithioic acid phenyl ester as the chelating agent, and ammonium persulfate as the initiator. The electrochemical mercury(II) sensing capability of the ion-imprinted polymer was studied via the modification of a cost-effective carbon paste electrode.

Three mononuclear nickel(II), cadmium(II) and zinc(II) complexes, [NiL2]·2CH3OH·H2O (1), [CdI2(HL)]·CH3OH (2) and [ZnL2] (3), have been synthesized from 3-hydroxy-4-methoxy-N'-[(Z)-(pyridin-2-yl)methylidene]benzohydrazide (HL) by microwave irradiation method. All complexes were characterized by CHN elemental analyses and infrared spectra. Structures of the complexes were further studied by single crystal X-ray determination, which reveals that the Ni and Zn atoms in complexes 1 and 3 are in octahedral coordination, and the Cd atom in complex 2 is in square pyramidal coordination.

The 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction (click chemistry approach) was employed to create a hexa-ferrocenylated 1,3,5-triphenylbenzene derivative. Leveraging the presence of metal-chelating sites associated with 1,2,3-triazole moieties and 1,4-dinitrogen systems (ethylenediamine-like), as well as tridentate chelating sites (1,4,7-trinitrogen, diethylene triamine-like) systems, the application of this molecule as a chemosensor for divalent transition metal cations was investigated. The interactions were probed voltammetrically and spectrofluorimetrically against seven selected cations: iron(II) (Fe), cobalt(II) (Co), nickel(II) (Ni), copper(II) (Cu), zinc(II) (Zn), cadmium(II) (Cd), and manganese(II) (Mn).

Two new two-dimensional (2D) coordination polymers (CPs), namely, poly[diaqua[μ-2,2'-(1,3,5,7-tetraoxo-1,2,3,5,6,7-hexahydropyrrolo[3,4-f]isoindole-2,6-diyl)diacetato-κO:O':O'':O''']cadmium(II)], [Cd(CHNO)(HO)] (1), and poly[[tetraaqua[μ-2,2'-(1,3,5,7-tetraoxo-1,2,3,5,6,7-hexahydropyrrolo[3,4-f]isoindole-2,6-diyl)diacetato-κO:O':O'':O'''][μ-2,2'-(1,3,5,7-tetraoxo-1,2,3,5,6,7-hexahydropyrrolo[3,4-f]isoindole-2,6-diyl)diacetato-κO:O']dizinc(II)] dihydrate], {[Zn(CHNO(HO)]·HO} (2), have been synthesized by the microwave-irradiated reaction of Cd(CHCOO)·2HO and Zn(CHCOO)·2HO, respectively, with N,N'-bis(glycinyl)pyromellitic diimide {BGPD, namely, 2,2'-(1,3,5,7-tetraoxo-1,2,3,5,6,7-hexahydropyrrolo[3,4-f]isoindole-2,6-diyl)diacetic acid, HL}. In the crystal structure of 1, the Cd ion is six-coordinated by four carboxylate O atoms from four symmetry-related L dianions and two coordinated water molecules, furnishing an octahedral coordination geometry. The bridging L dianion links four symmetry-related Cd cations into a 2D layer-like structure with a 3,4-connected bex topology.

A series of zinc(II) thioamidate complexes [Zn{SC(Pr)NR}] for R = Pr ( = 2) (2), Bu (3) ( = 1), Ph (4) ( = 2) and Cy (5) ( = 2) and one cadmium(II) thioamidate complex [Cd{SC(Pr)NBu}], (6), were designed and synthesised as single-source precursors for AACVD ZnS and CdS. Solid-state structures of all four zinc(II) compounds revealed distorted tetrahedral or trigonal bipyramidal geometries, with varying tendencies for dimeric association, mediated by {Zn-S} bridging bonds. The thermogravimetric analysis identified the {Bu} derivertive, 3, as the most promising precursor based on its low decomposition onset (118 °C) and clean conversion to ZnS.
