A coumarin coupled tetraphenylethylene based AIEgen (TPE-Lac) with an intense greenish-yellow emission has been synthesized and utilized for multipurpose sensing and imaging applications. TPE-Lac acts as a sensitive sensor for the detection of cyanide ions (CN) with an immediate turn-off response in the presence of many other interfering cations and anions. The limit of detection (LOD) was as low as 33 nM, which is well below the permissible limit set by the World Health Organization (WHO). Cyanide detection in the solid phase was successfully demonstrated by drop-casting the solution of the TPE-Lac probe on TLC plates and measuring and analysing the fluorescence response by ImageJ analysis. TPE-Lac was further employed in the detection of explosive nitroaromatics in solution and solid phases. Also, TPE-Lac was found suitable as an imaging agent and could easily percolate into live H520 cells giving bright fluorescence from the intra-cellular region. Easy and cost-effective synthesis, fast response and low LODs are some of the advantages of this AIEgen over available molecular probes for the same purpose.

Chlorinated coumarins, which are as cytotoxic as highly toxic halobenzoquinones toward CHO-K1 cells, have recently been identified as disinfection byproducts in drinking water disinfection processes. Therefore, detecting coumarins in water samples collected at various stages from drinking water treatment plants helps assess the formation of chlorinated coumarins in drinking water. Hence, a simple, rapid, accurate, and sensitive method for quantifying coumarins in water samples is required.

Huo-Xiang-Zheng-Qi Mixture is a renowned traditional Chinese medicine formula used to treat ailments associated with dampness pathogens. This study employed ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry to perform a comprehensive qualitative and quantitative analysis of the chemical compounds in Huo-Xiang-Zheng-Qi Mixture. A total of 155 compounds were identified, including 61 flavonoids and their glycosides, 36 phenylethanoid glycosides, 23 saponins, 14 coumarins, 9 organic acids, 1 amino acid, 2 nucleosides and purines, and 9 additional compounds.

Shenfu Qiangxin (SFQX) pills are proprietary traditional Chinese medicine used for the treatment of chronic heart failure with significant clinical effects. However, the systematic identification and quantification of complexed components in SFQX have not been reported yet. In this work, a reliable and comprehensive method for a rapid identification of chemical components was developed by data dependent acquisition using ultra performance liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Q Exactive-Orbitrap-MS).

The synthesis of coumarin- and flavonoid-chalcone hybrids via Pd-catalyzed Heck-type coupling of arene diazonium salts and 8-allylcoumarins and -flavonoids is reported. The β-hydride elimination step proceeds with high regioselectivity if an OMOM-substituent is present at the position C7, adjacent to the allyl group. A selective allylic oxidation of the coupling products was accomplished using DDQ in the presence of silica to furnish the chalcones.

Kinetic stabilization of amyloidogenic immunoglobulin light chains (LCs) through small molecule binding may become the first treatment for the proteinopathy component of light chain amyloidosis (AL). Kinetic stabilizers selectively bind to the native state over the misfolding transition state, slowing denaturation. Prior λ full-length LC dimer (FL LC) kinetic stabilizers exhibited considerable plasma protein binding.
