Processes of intracellular and extracellular transport play one of the most important roles in the functioning of cells. Changes to transport mechanisms in a neuron can lead to the disruption of many cellular processes and even to cell death. It was shown that disruption of the processes of vesicular, axonal, and synaptic transport can lead to a number of diseases of the central nervous system, including Parkinson's disease (PD). Here, we studied changes in the expression of genes whose protein products are involved in the transport processes (, , , , and ) in the brain tissues and peripheral blood of mice with MPTP (1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine)-induced models of PD. We detected changes in the expressions of , , and at the earliest modeling stages. Additionally, we have identified conspicuous changes in the expression level of in the striatum and substantia nigra of mice with MPTP-induced models of PD in its early stages. These data clearly suggest the involvement of protein products in these genes in the earliest stages of the pathogenesis of PD.

mTOR Signaling Regulates Multiple Metabolic Pathways in Human Lung Fibroblasts After TGF-β and in Pulmonary Fibrosis.

Department of Medicine, Section of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, The University of Chicago, Chicago, IL 60637.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is a fatal disease characterized by the TGF-β-dependent activation of lung fibroblasts, leading to excessive deposition of collagen proteins and progressive replacement of healthy lung with scar tissue. We and others have shown that TGF-β-mediated activation of the Mechanistic Target of Rapamycin Complex 1 (mTORC1) and downstream upregulation of Activating Transcription Factor 4 (ATF4) promote metabolic reprogramming in lung fibroblasts characterized by upregulation of the de synthesis of glycine, the most abundant amino acid found in collagen protein. Whether mTOR and ATF4 regulate other metabolic pathways in lung fibroblasts has not been explored.

Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), characterized by the deposition of amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides in the walls of medium and small vessels of the brain and leptomeninges, is a major cause of lobar hemorrhage in elderly individuals. Among the genetic risk factors for CAA that continue to be recognized, the apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene is the most significant and prevalent, as its variants have been implicated in more than half of all patients with CAA. While the presence of the APOE ε4 allele markedly increases the risk of CAA, the ε2 allele confers a protective effect relative to the common ε3 allele.

Hydrogen energy will play a dominant role in energy transition from fossil fuel to low carbon processes, while economical, efficient, and safe hydrogen storage and transportation technology has become one of the main bottlenecks that currently hinder the application of the hydrogen energy scale. Methanol has widely been regarded as a primary liquid H storage medium due to its high hydrogen content, easy storage and transportation and relatively low toxicity. Hydrogen release from methanol using photocatalysis has thus been the focus of intense research and recent years have witnessed its fast progress and drawbacks.

Diquat (DQ), a contact herbicide extensively utilized in both agricultural and nonagricultural domains, exhibits a high correlation with neuronal disorders. Nevertheless, the toxicity and underlying mechanisms associated with exposure to environmental concentrations of DQ remain ambiguous. Here, we report dose-dependent cellular neurotoxicity of DQ in .

Ion channels play a crucial role in cardiac functions, and their activities exhibit dynamic changes during heart development. However, the precise function of ion channels in human heart development remains elusive. In this study, we utilized human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) as a model to mimic the process of human embryonic heart development.
