Manganese ores are the major raw materials utilized in the production of manganese ferroalloys. Decrepitation, which is described as the breakage or disintegration of the ore particles upon heating in a rotary kiln, is an important quality parameter of these ores. The Decrepitation Index (DI), the parameter used to describe the extent of decrepitation, is described as the ratio of the mass of particles <6 mm after pre-heating to the total mass of the sample. After a rigorous review of literature, it was found that the procedure to determine DI of manganese ores in rotary kiln does not exist. This necessitated the development of a method to determine the DI of manganese ores when pre-heated in a rotary kiln. The method was developed through the following steps •The method from the ISO standard 8371 to determine the DI of iron ores in a muffle furnace was studied and the method developed was based on the method.•A literature review on the decrepitation of ores and the factors that cause fines generation during a tumbling test. The method developed can be used to investigate the effect of temperature, rotational speed and size range on the DI of South African manganese ores.

The problem of low carbon-nitrogen ratio (C/N) in wastewater is a major challenge for biological treatment, especially the complex pollution of ammonia nitrogen (NH-N), sulfamethoxazole (SMX), and copper ions (Cu(II)). Herein, a strain of Pseudoxanthomonas sp. MA23 with manganese (Mn) reduction-coupled ammonia oxidation properties was isolated.

Article Synopsis
  • * This study focuses on using electrolytic manganese dioxide (γ-MnO), a cost-effective material, to extract lithium from the Tuzla Geothermal Power Plant in Turkey through a mini-pilot reactor setup.
  • * The research demonstrated effective lithium sorption/desorption, achieving up to 230 mg/L of lithium concentration after multiple cycles, while also confirming that the γ-MnO sorbent retains significant efficiency even after reuse.

Article Synopsis
  • Excessive iron (Fe) in coastal aquaculture water can negatively impact aquaculture development, prompting this study to explore manganese sand as a removal solution.
  • The research found that over 99.7% of Fe could be removed in 120 minutes, with removal efficiency improved by lower Fe concentrations, higher temperatures, and lower pH levels.
  • The results indicate that the Fe removal process follows a pseudo-first-order kinetic model and that iron oxide (FeO(OH)) primarily forms on the manganese sand's surface during the reaction.

Our study helps to unravel the complexity of the Lomagundi-Jatuli event, the largest and longest positive carbon isotope excursion ever recorded on the Earth's surface, by providing a unique view of Paleoproterozoic graphitic rocks from the Borborema province of Northeastern Brazil. Through detailed mineralogical, textural, chemical and isotopic analyses, we bring a new perspective that provide support to elevated primary productivity and large-scale organic carbon burial during the Lomagundi-Jatuli event. Graphite crystals with distinctive textural features occur in association with silicate and oxidised manganese ores, manganese quartzites, garnetites, and gneisses.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study addresses the critical issue of steel corrosion and aims to develop a new surface treatment method to improve corrosion resistance in Q235 steel, making it suitable for various applications.
  • - Using the sol-gel method with different manganese nitrate concentrations and electrolysis times, the researchers identified optimal treatment conditions, specifically 0.1 mol/L manganese concentration and 2 hours of electrolysis.
  • - Electrochemical tests showed that this treatment significantly decreased the corrosion current in saline solutions, especially at 1 wt.% NaCl, where the corrosion current reduced from 24.8 µA/cm to 6.79 µA/cm, indicating enhanced corrosion resistance due to the MnFeO spinel coating.
