Background: Wastewater systems are usually considered antibiotic resistance hubs connecting human society and the natural environment. Antibiotic usage can increase the abundance of both ARGs (antibiotic resistance genes) and MGEs (mobile gene elements). Understanding the transcriptomic profiles of ARGs and MGEs remains a major research goal.

In this study, we present for the first time the landscape of the lung microbiota in patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia in Intensive Care Units in Saudi Arabia. DNA from 83 deep endotracheal aspirate lung samples was subjected to PacBio sequencing to identify pathogens in comparison with conventional diagnostic techniques. Patients on ventilation with pneumonia presented with similar lung flora to those of patients on ventilation without pneumonia.

Antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) have become increasing concerning issues, threatening human health. Persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes (PS-AOPs), due to their remarkable potential in combating antibiotic resistance, have garnered significant attention in the field of disinfection in recent years. In this review, we systematically evaluated the efficacy and underlying mechanism of PS integration with various activation methods for the elimination of ARB/ARGs.

The contamination of water systems by antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin (CIP), which is used to treat bacterial infections, poses severe risks to environmental safety and public health. To address this issue, a novel zwitterionic polymeric nanocomposite (PNs-HTC) was developed in this study. This novel material was synthesized using alkylated chitosan ionic macromonomers, ionic monomers and combined with hydrotalcite (HTC) via in situ free radical polymerization.

PEN-FAST-ED: Utilizing the PEN-FAST decision tool to guide antibiotic prescribing in the emergency department.

Am J Emerg Med

January 2025

Department of Pharmacy, Sarasota Memorial Health Care System, 1700 S Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, FL 34239, USA.

Background: Patient-reported penicillin allergies are frequently encountered in the emergency department (ED), which often lead to non-beta-lactam antibiotic use despite beta-lactams' place as first-line therapy in most bacterial infections. The PEN-FAST clinical decision tool was developed and validated to identify patients with a low risk of true penicillin allergies that do not require formal skin testing for rechallenging. The tool consists of four questions that add up to a total score ranging from 0 to 5.
