Poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) and poly(d-lactide) (PDLA) alternatively pack with each other and form stereocomplex crystals (SCs). The crystal habits of SCs formed in the dilute solution highly depend on the molecular weight (⟨⟩). In this study, we investigated chain-folding (CF) structure for C labeled PLLA (-PLLA) chains in SCs with PDLAs that have either high or low ⟨⟩s by employing an advanced Double Quantum (DQ) NMR. It was found that the ensemble average of the successive adjacent re-entry number ⟨⟩ for the -PLLA chains drastically change depending on ⟨⟩s of the counter PDLA chains in the SCs. It was concluded that the CF structures of -PLLA depending on ⟨⟩s of PDLA determine the crystal habits of SCs.

Dilute Povidone-Iodine Irrigation: The Science of Molecular Iodine (I2) Kinetics and Its Antimicrobial Activity.

J Am Acad Orthop Surg

January 2025

From the UC Davis Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Sacramento, CA.

Dilute povidone-iodine (polyvinylpyrrolidone iodine [PVP-I]) irrigation in spine surgery and total joint arthroplasty has seen a rapid and substantial increase in its use during the past decade. Yet, most surgeons do not know the chemistry and biochemistry that explain its efficacy in preventing infections. PVP-I forms a complex with molecular iodine (I2), facilitating the delivery of I2 to the membrane of the infectious organism.

Towards Accurate Biocompatibility: Rethinking Cytotoxicity Evaluation for Biodegradable Magnesium Alloys in Biomedical Applications.

J Funct Biomater

December 2024

CS-Surgical Sciences and Technologies-SS Omics Science Platform for Personalized Orthopedics, IRCCS Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli, 40136 Bologna, Italy.

Magnesium and its alloys represent promising candidates for biomedical implants due to their biodegradability and mechanical properties, which are similar to natural bone. However, their rapid degradation process characterized by dynamic pH fluctuations and significant hydrogen gas evolution during biocorrosion adversely affects both in vitro and in vivo assessments. While the ISO 10993-5 and 12 standards provide guidelines for evaluating the in vitro biocompatibility of biodegradable materials, they also introduce testing variability conditions that yield inconsistent results.

Improved Methods for the Synthesis of BH and -Heterocycle-Coordinated BH (-Het·BH).

Inorg Chem

December 2024

School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Henan Key Laboratory of Boron Chemistry and Advanced Materials, Henan Normal University, Xinxiang, Henan 453007, China.

Improved methods for the synthesis of BH and a series of -heterocycle-coordinated BH complexes (-Het·BH) have been developed with readily obtained KBH as the starting material. Oxidation of KBH could provide BH in over 90% yield. Then, the -Het·BH complexes were prepared from the as-synthesized BH through in situ multistep reactions by reacting with NaH, -heterocycles, and dilute hydrochloric acid.

Pomegranate, hawthorn, gilaburu, blackberry, and rosehip vinegar postbiotic solutions (VPS) were produced by traditional methods. The bioactive components of VPS, antioxidant capacity, antimicrobial activities, minimum inhibition concentration (MIC), and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) assays were determined. While rosehip VPS has the highest amount of lactic acid, phenolic and flavonoids, gilaburu VPS has the highest butyric acid.

Chlorinated coumarins, which are as cytotoxic as highly toxic halobenzoquinones toward CHO-K1 cells, have recently been identified as disinfection byproducts in drinking water disinfection processes. Therefore, detecting coumarins in water samples collected at various stages from drinking water treatment plants helps assess the formation of chlorinated coumarins in drinking water. Hence, a simple, rapid, accurate, and sensitive method for quantifying coumarins in water samples is required.
