Polymer structures with tunable symmetry and sizes are desired for applications such as lithography, filtration membranes, and separation. Here we report the self-assembled supramolecular hexagonal columnar (Φ) structures with tunable lattice size varying from 5 to 7 nm by constructing hydrogen-bonded copolymers bearing poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) and two dendritic molecular additives, 1-[4'-(3″,4″,5″-tridecyloxybenzoyloxy)phenyleneoxycarbonyl]-3-[(4″-hydroxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]benzene (12CBP) and 4-hydroxyphenyl (3,4,5-tridecyloxy)benzoate (12CTB). Despite the distinct molecular size difference between 12CBP and 12CTB, the resulting ternary supramolecular copolymers, P4VP(12CBP)(12CTB), possess a homogeneous Φ phase at ≥ 0.1 and ≥ 0.2. Each column is constructed with P4VP as the backbone tethered with mixed side chains. The column diameter is between the size of the corresponding P4VP(12CBP) and P4VP(12CTB) and could be easily tuned by varying and . The enhancement of Φ in supramolecular copolymers is attributed to the entropy effect of the mixed side chain and enthalpy effect from hydrogen bonding interaction of the P4VP backbone and two molecules (12CBP and 12CTB).

ConspectusThe emergence of two-dimensional (2D) materials, such as graphene, transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), has sparked significant interest due to their unique physicochemical, optical, electrical, and mechanical properties. Furthermore, their atomically thin nature enables mechanical flexibility, high sensitivity, and simple integration onto flexible substrates, such as paper and plastic. The surface chemistry of a nanomaterial determines many of its properties, such as its chemical and catalytic activity.

We present an efficient strategy for on-surface engineering of organic metal-free supramolecular complexes with long-term spin protection. By vacuum deposition of azafullerene (CN) monomers on a pre-deposited template layer of [10]cycloparaphenylene ([10]CPP) nanohoops on Au(111) surface we exploit the molecular shape matching between the CN and [10]CPP for the azafullerene encapsulation with nanohoops in a guest-host complexation geometry. CN⊂[10]CPP supramolecular complexes self-assemble into an extended two-dimensional hexagonal lattice yielding a high density network of stable spin-1/2 radicals.

- exhibited significant aggregation-induced Emission (AIE) characteristics, including high brightness (αAIE ≈ 40), robust light stability, a substantial Stokes shift (128 nm), and a high signal-to-noise ratio, effectively overcoming aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ). Derived from the axially chiral -H-BINOL, - was synthesized via nucleophilic cyclization and exhibited pronounced self-assembly properties. Through robust intra- and intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions, - formed diverse supramolecular structures, including spherical flower-like aggregates, hollow-core triangular tubules, hexagonal tubules, and irregular white block-like stacks.

Incorporation of heteroatoms and/or non-hexagonal rings into polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can alter their intrinsic structures and physical properties. However, it is challenging to construct PAHs featuring boron/carbon composition and non-hexagonal combination. Herein, we disclose the selective synthesis of spiro-type and pentagon/heptagon-containing boron-doped polycyclic π-systems by the Scholl reaction.

High-strength, strongly bonded and self-healing materials are of great interest for several applications; however, the experimental and design of all such properties in a single material is challenging. In the present work, inspired by cartilage tissue, polyacrylamide (PAM)-based tough and durable dimer (PAM-Ag and PAM-BNOH) and trimer (PAM-Ag-BNOH) nanocomposites were synthesized by encapsulating silver (Ag) and hydroxylated hexagonal boron nitride (BNOH). Strong interfacial interaction was achieved by introducing (computational modelling and DFT approaches) noncovalent bonds in the dimer and trimer nanohybrids.
