Orbital cellulitis in children rarely occurs secondary to smoking water pipe. A 3-year-old girl who presented with fever, eyelid swelling, pain, and proptosis of the left eye for 4 days after water pipe consumption. The patient was given the usual course of antibiotics for a few days along with subperiosteal abscess drainage however no improvement was noticed for a week. Cultures were positive for methicillin-resistant and pseudomonas aeruginosa. Intravenous dexamethasone was co-administered in three courses for 3 weeks, during which residual symptoms was slowly resolving. In conclusion, attempt of dexamethasone in children can shorten hospital stay and augment full recovery.

This study investigates the feasibility of using nano-thermal rod for deicing tunnel pavements in cold region. The heating performance of the nano-thermal rod was compared with that of carbon fiber heating wire under low voltage conditions. Experimental studies were conducted in a controlled environmental chamber to evaluate the effects of arrangement parameters (spacing, buried depth, input power) and environmental factors (ambient temperature and moisture) on heating rate and effectiveness.

Chlorine, the most widely utilized disinfectant for drinking water globally, has recently been implicated in facilitating the spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), raising concerns about its underestimated environmental and ecological risks. However, given the current fragmented research focus and results, a comprehensive understanding of the potential mechanisms and influencing factors behind chlorination-promoted ARGs transmission in drinking water systems is crucial. This work is the first to systematically review the variations in abundance, transmission mechanisms, influencing factors, and mitigation strategies related to ARGs during the chlorination process.

Background/objectives: Pathogen inactivation and harmful gene destruction from water just before drinking is the last line of defense to protect people from waterborne diseases. However, commonly used disinfection methods, such as chlorination, ultraviolet irradiation, and membrane filtration, experience several challenges such as continuous chemical dosing, the spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and intensive energy consumption.
Methods: Here, we perform a simultaneous elimination of pathogens and ARGs in drinking water using local electric fields and in-situ generated trace copper ions (LEF-Cu) without external chemical dosing.

Aims: We investigated the combined effects of pipe materials and disinfection chemicals on bacterial community and its active RNA fraction in water and biofilms in a pilot-scale premise plumbing system.
Methods And Results: The changes in bacterial communities were studied within four pipelines using copper and cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) pipe with chlorine or chloramine disinfection. The total and active bacterial communities and the presence of opportunistic pathogens (Legionella spp.
Harvesting low-velocity water flow energy stably over the long term is a significant challenge. Herein, a flexible rolling triboelectric nanogenerator with a bionic gill cover structure (GFR-TENG) to harvest steady low-velocity water flow energy is proposed. The dielectric material of the GFR-TENG is eight flexible hollow fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) pipes, which guarantees that rolling friction is formed between the dielectric material and copper electrode.
