Gas diffusion through variably-water-saturated zeolitic tuff: Implications for transport following a subsurface nuclear event. | LitMetric

AI Article Synopsis

Article Abstract

Noble gas transport through geologic media has important applications in the characterization of underground nuclear explosions (UNEs). Without accurate transport models, it is nearly impossible to distinguish between xenon signatures originating from civilian nuclear facilities and UNEs. Understanding xenon transport time through the earth is a key parameter for interpreting measured xenon isotopic ratios. One of the most challenging aspects of modeling gas transport time is accounting for the effect of variable water saturation of geological media. In this study, we utilize bench-scale laboratory experiments to characterize the diffusion of krypton, xenon, and sulfur hexafluoride (SF) through intact zeolitic tuff under different saturations. We demonstrate that the water in rock cores with low partial saturation dramatically affects xenon transport time compared to that of krypton and SF by blocking sites in zeolitic tuff that preferentially adsorb xenon. This leads to breakthrough trends that are strongly influenced by the degree of the rock saturation. Xenon is especially susceptible to this phenomenon, a finding that is crucial to incorporate in subsurface gas transport models used for nuclear event identification. We also find that the breakthrough of SF diverges significantly from that of noble gases within our system. When developing field scale models, it is important to understand how the behavior of xenon deviates from chemical tracers used in the field, such as SF (Carrigan et al., 1996). These new insights demonstrate the critical need to consider the interplay between rock saturation and fission product sorption during transport modeling, and the importance of evaluating specific interactions between geomedia and gases of interest, which may differ from geomedia interactions with chemical tracers.

Article Synopsis
  • Neogene volcanism in southeastern Iberian Peninsula led to the formation of volcanic structures and accumulated pyroclastic materials, resulting in the unique zeolite deposit around San José-Los Escullos.
  • The research aimed to characterize this natural zeolite (SZ) for its mineral, chemical, and technical properties, assessing its potential use as a natural pozzolan, particularly in cement mixtures.
  • Analysis methods included XRD, SEM, XRF, and TGA, confirming the presence of reactive minerals and demonstrating that the zeolite samples exhibited good quality pozzolanic reactivity over time.

Unveiling the Broad-Spectrum Virucidal Potential of Purified Clinoptilolite-Tuff.

Microorganisms

August 2024

GLOCK Health, Science and Research GmbH, 2232 Deutsch-Wagram, Austria.

Due to its remarkable surface properties, natural clinoptilolite-tuff interacts with a variety of biochemical, pharmaceutical, chemical, and microbiological entities, including human viruses. In the present work, the virucidal activity of purified clinoptilolite-tuff (PCT) was investigated using a variety of viruses, differing in their structure and composition. Influenza A virus, Herpes Simplex virus, Rhinovirus, and Parvovirus were chosen to represent enveloped and non-enveloped viruses with RNA and DNA genomes.

Purified Clinoptilolite-Tuff as an Efficient Sorbent for Food-Derived Peanut Allergens.

Int J Mol Sci

June 2024

GLOCK Health, Science and Research GmbH, Hausfeldstrasse 17, 2232 Deutsch-Wagram, Austria.

The avoidance of allergen intake is crucial for persons affected by peanut allergy; however, the cross-contamination of food is common and leads to unpredictable consequences after the consumption of supposedly "safe" food. The aim of the present study was to eliminate harmful traces of peanut allergens from food using purified clinoptilolite-tuff (PCT)-a specially processed zeolite material. Analyses were performed using a peanut ELISA and a Coomassie blue (Bradford) assay.

The application of natural zeolites to improve soil quality and functioning has become highly popular, but we still miss information about the long-term effects on the soil due to its application. This study assesses the soil quality index (SQI) of three distinct agricultural soil systems 6-10 years after a single application of natural chabazite zeolite as a soil amendment. These soils exhibit different management practices: intensive arable (cereals), intensive perennial (pear) and organic perennial (olive).

This work started as a joint academia and company research project with the aim of finding new applications for domestically sourced volcanic products and related waste (pumice, lapillus, zeolitic tuff and volcanic debris from Tessennano and Arlena quarry) by creating a database of secondary volcanic raw materials and their intrinsic characteristics to help industry replace virgin materials and enhance circularity. In this context, accurate chemical, mineralogical, morphological, granulometric and thermal characterizations were performed. Based on the results presented, it can be concluded that due to their lightness, these materials can be used in the design and preparation of lightweight aggregates for agronomic purposes or in the construction field.
