An antibiofouling polymer coating, combined with both zwitterionic and amphiphilic features, is engineered by a two-step modification of a commodity polymer. The surface properties of the resultant polymer coating can be easily tuned by varying the extent of cross-linking in the network. Higher antibiofouling efficiency was observed for these surfaces vs. an elastomeric polydimethylsiloxane standard (Sylgard 184) against the adsorption of biomacromolecules and a marine fouling organism ( zoospores) has been demonstrated. This design establishes a platform for the achievement of functionalized amphiphilic zwitterionic copolymers from relatively inexpensive starting materials via simple chemical manipulations.

For the first time asymmetric and symmetric carboxytriazoleimidazolium derivatives with different structures were synthesized. The critical micellization concentration (CMC) value was estimated using a pyrene fluorescent probe and the solubility of Orange OT. The complexation ability of carboxytriazoleimidazolium derivatives toward bovine serum albumin (BSA) has been investigated by various physico-chemical methods: fluorescence spectroscopy, electrophoretic light scattering and circular dichroism.

Membrane technology is an important component of resource recovery. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with inherent long-range ordered structure and permanent porosity are ideal materials for fabricating advanced membrane. Zwitterionic COFs have unique features beyond single ionic COFs containing anions or cations.

To prepare amphiphilic diblock copolymers (MP), a controlled radical polymerization approach was employed, incorporating hydrophilic poly(2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl phosphorylcholine) (PMPC) with hydrophobic poly(3-methoxypropyl acrylate) (PMPA). The synthesized diblock copolymers feature a PMPC block with a degree of polymerization (DP) of 100 and a PMPA block with DP (=) values of 171 and 552. The hydrophilic PMPC block exhibits biocompatibility, such as inhibition of platelet and protein adsorption, because of its hydrophilic pendant zwitterionic phosphorylcholine groups that have the same chemical structure as cell membrane surfaces.

Silicone coatings are widely employed in marine antifouling applications due to their low surface energy. However, in static marine environments, pure silicone coatings are ineffective in preventing the adhesion of marine biofilms, which consist of proteins, marine bacteria, and extracellular matrices, ultimately promoting the attachment of macrofouling organisms. To address the limitations in antifouling performance under static conditions, this study introduces a silicone-based antifouling coating modified with zwitterionic polymers.

Polyzwitterions refer to polymers containing both positive and negative charged groups in one side chain, which have shown unique physicochemical properties and significant potential in diverse applications due to their amphiphilic and net-neutral charged properties. This review aims to highlight the recent advances in the design and synthesis of polyzwitterions including direct polymerization of zwitterionic monomers and deionization of polymers. Furthermore, the formation of polyzwitterion based soft materials such as nanoparticles by self-assembly, hydrogels, coatings and polyzwitterion brushes, as well as the influence of the microstructure on their properties and applications are discussed.
