Paper-Strip-Based Sensors for HS Detection: A Proof-of-Principle Study.

Published: April 2022

In this work, the authors explored the interaction of a suite of fluorescent zinc complexes with HS. The authors provide evidence that HS binds the zinc center of all the complexes under investigation, allowing them to possibly function as sensors by a 'coordinative-based' approach. Naked-eye color changes occur when treating the systems with HS, so the fluorescence responses are modulated by the presence of HS, which has been related to a change in the energy level and coupling of excited states through a computational study. The results show the potential of the systems to function as HS/HS colorimetric and fluorescent sensors. Paper-strip-based sensing experiments foresee the potential of using this family of complexes as chemosensors of HS in more complex biological fluids.

Organic luminescent materials having photoluminescence in their solid state have become emerging trends in chemistry, materials science, and biology due to their versatile potential applications. In the present contribution, we have introduced some methylenebis(4,1-phenylene) electron donor-acceptor-based fashionable solid-state fluorescent molecules, MBA, MBB, and MBH, having exciting photoluminescence characteristics in their solid and aggregate states. Interestingly, all probes exhibited a compelling aggregation-induced enhanced emission (AIEE) phenomenon in aqueous media.

A ratiometric fluorescent and colorimetric detecting assay for NO was realized by a hybrid nanosensor (Co-CDs@R-CDs) utilizing firstly through the redox reaction of nitrite (NO) with Co, of which the hybrid nanosensor Co-CDs@R-CDs was fabricated by Co-doped carbon dots (Co-CDs) and a reference of red-emitting carbon dots (R-CDs). The ratiometric fluorescent linear detection range of NO was 2.5-45 μM and the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.

Bilirubin (BR), a heme protein produced from breakdown of haemoglobin is present in aged red blood cells; whose abnormal concentration is associated with diseases like hyperbilirubinemia, coronary disease, iron deficiency, and so on. Herein, we have synthesized a selective, sensitive, and low-cost sensing platform using fluorescent nitrogen doped carbon dots (NCDs), prepared from precursors; citric acid and urea via a simple microwave-assisted method. The emission at 444 nm on excitation with 360 nm was well quenched in presence of BR suggesting a direct turn-off detection for BR.
