Using the integral equation of the Doi-Edwards theory that only accounts for tube orientation of entangled linear polymers, we explore the behavior of the stress maximum typically observed in shear startup as a function of the waiting time between repeated startup runs. Depending on whether the first run is interrupted before the maximum, or sufficiently beyond it, the magnitude of the peak in the second run comes out nonmonotonic with or else monotonically increasing, respectively. A similar behavior has been observed in several experiments and commonly attributed to structural changes of the entangled network. By emphasizing the role played by the mere orientation of the network strands in faithfully reproducing all the observed behavior, at least qualitatively, our results help to put things in better perspective.

Objectives: This study aimed to describe the biometrics and elasticity of the perineal body and the anal sphincter in the ninth month of pregnancy and explore their association with the risk of perineal tears during childbirth.
Methods: In this prospective observational study, pregnant women at 36-40 weeks of gestation were included. Using transperineal 2D-mode ultrasound and shear wave elastography (SWE), we measured the biometrics and stiffness of the perineal body (PB), external anal sphincter (EAS), internal anal sphincter (IAS), and anal mucosa (AM) at rest and during Valsalva maneuvers.

Meat quality is a complex trait that exhibits significant variation across pig breeds, and the regulatory mechanisms governing pork meat quality are not fully elucidated. We compared the transcriptomics and metabolomics of the longissimus dorsi (LD) muscle between the Songliao Black Pig (SBP) and Large White × Landrace Pig (LWLDP) to investigate breed-specific differences in meat quality and underlying regulatory pathways. The results showed that SBP meat had a higher marbling score and backfat thickness, a richer color, a lower shear force, and reduced drip loss.

The thixotropic behavior of mechanically disk refined cellulose nanofibril (CNF) aqueous suspensions with 100% fines content at 1 and 3 wt% concentrations was investigated through creep, shear-recovery, multiple-step oscillation, startup, and flow loop experiments. The CNF suspensions exhibited the key thixotropic characteristics such as reduction in viscosity over time and structure recovery after cessation of flow. The results of shear recovery and multiple-step oscillation experiments suggested that regardless of the CNF concentration, lower extents of deformation impede the ability of the suspension to recover its structure at rest and higher levels of shear rates and strain amplitudes facilitate the structure recovery.

The microvasculature within the tumor microenvironment (TME) plays an essential role in cancer signaling beyond nutrient delivery. However, it has been challenging to control the generation and/or maintenance of microvasculature in systems, a critical step for establishing cancer models of high clinical biomimicry. There have been great successes in engineering tissues incorporating microvasculature (.

Particle dynamics simulations are used to study the startup flow of jammed soft particle suspensions in shear flow from a thermodynamic perspective. This thermodynamic framework is established using the concept of the two-body excess entropy extracted from the transient pair distribution function and elastic energy of the suspension as a function of strain at different shear rates and suspension volume fractions. Although the evolution of the elastic energy in these soft particle glasses closely mimics the stress-strain behavior at different shear rates and volume fractions, there are several differences corresponding to their overshoots in terms of the broadness and location of the peaks.
