Introduction: Enamel translucency, essential for the aesthetic appeal of teeth, is primarily determined by its thickness, quality, and refractive index. Several factors, including age, genetics, diet, oral hygiene practices, fluoride exposure, and acidic challenges, can influence enamel translucency. Tobacco use, in particular, leads to significant alterations in enamel appearance by penetrating its micropores, causing yellowing and browning.

Tooth shade selection is a fundamental factor in the success of dental restorations, and visual impairment may adversely affect this process. The aim of this cross-sectional clinical study was to determine whether visual impairment influences shade selection using two methods: spectrophotometry and shade guides. : The sample consisted of 2796 maxillary and mandibular teeth, and shade selection was measured subjectively with a shade guide (VITA Classic, VITA Zahnfabrik) and objectively with a spectrophotometer (VITA Easyshade V, VITA Zahnfabrik, Bad Säckingen, Germany).

Unlabelled: White spot lesions (WSLs) are demineralized lesions of the enamel that form in the presence of bacterial plaque, affecting the aesthetics by modifying the refractive index of the enamel, giving the characteristic "chalky" aspect. They have various causes, including fixed orthodontic treatments, improper hygiene, fluorosis and genetic factors.
Background/objectives: Considering the latest need for dental aesthetics and the popularization of fixed orthodontic treatments, the need to effectively treat WSLs has increased.

The removal of subgingival deposits, especially calculus, plays a crucial role in basic periodontal therapy. However, manual detection methods affect accuracy owing to the operator's skill. To avoid this uncertainty, we have developed a calculus detection device named "Sensor probe" and evaluated its ability to detect calculus for future clinical applications.
