The health problems caused by water pollution cannot be ignored, and the contribution of pesticides to water pollution has also become increasingly unignorable. The modified semi-coke as an adsorbent for reducing pesticide pollution to water was obtained from activated semi-coke which was modified by nitric acid (HNO). The semi-coke was obtained by carbonization using 60 mesh walnut shell powder. After acid-base deashing, the semi-coke is dipped into zinc chloride (ZnCl) solution to obtain activated semi-coke. Through BET analysis, the specific surface areas of semi-coke, activated semi-coke and modified semi-coke were 26.8 m/g, 243.9 m/g, and 339.6 m/g respectively. An extremely high adsorption capacity of the adsorbents which is used to treat wastewater was achieved. The optimum adsorption conditions for modified semi-coke on thiodicarb solution were 30 mg/L of thiodicarb solution, adsorbent dosage of 0.01 g, adsorption temperature of 25 °C and adsorption time of 90 min. The optimum adsorption amount of 29.54 mg/gsor was achieved (sor is the abbreviation for sorbent). Moreover, through kinetics study, the result manifests that the modified semi-coke adsorption process is more fitted to the second-order kinetic model. This study provided a research implication theoretically for the treatment of pesticides in water.

Preparation of modified semi-coke has been achieved, using phosphoric acid as the modifying agent, by microwave heating from virgin semi-coke. Process optimization using a Central Composite Design (CCD) design of Response Surface Methodology (RSM) technique for the preparation of modifies semi-coke is presented in this paper. The optimum conditions for producing modified semi-coke were: concentration of phosphoric acid 2.

Modified semi-coke (MSC) supported ZnFe(2)O(4) was prepared under the condition of ultrasonic irradiation. Performance of the sorbents was tested using a fixed-bed reactor as a hot gas desulfurizer. The MSC support, the mass ratio of zinc ferrites to the support, calcination temperature, and the ultrasonic conditions of power and time all had influences on the structure and the breakthrough behavior of the sorbent.

To improve the desulfurization efficiency of sorbents at low cost, modified semi-coke was used as the substrate for mixed metal oxides (ZFM; oxides of zinc [Zn], iron [Fe], and manganese [Mn]) in hot gas desulfurization. Performance of the prepared ZFM/modified semi-coke (MS) sorbents were evaluated in a fixed-bed reactor in the temperature range 400-550°C. Results showed that the molar ratio of Mn to Zn, effect of the substrate, the calcination temperature, and the sulfidation temperature influenced the performance of the sorbents.

The adsorption characteristics of virgin and potassium permanganate modified lignite semi-coke (SC) for gaseous Hg0 were investigated in an attempt to produce more effective and lower price adsorbents for the control of elemental mercury emission. Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) measurements, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to analyze the surface physical and chemical properties of SC, Mn-SC and Mn-H-SC before and after mercury adsorption. The results indicated that potassium permanganate modification had significant influence on the properties of semi-coke, such as the specific surface area, pore structure and surface chemical functional groups.
