A new composite film from chitosan (CS) and biotin (BIO) was developed to enhance burn wound healing. The film was prepared by electrostatic interaction between CS and BIO. Four different ratios of CS to BIO v/v (4:1, 3:2, 2:3, and 1:4) were prepared. The films were comprehensively characterized using FTIR, DSC, and AFM. The release studies showed that the most promising formula with the highest release behavior was CS to BIO 1: 4. The adhesion times were reported as 0.50 ± 0.30 min for CS film compared to 6.2 ± 0.30, 8.4 ± 0.40, 11.2 ± 0.50, and 13.83 ± 1.04 min for CS to BIO films v/v (1:4, 2:3, 3:2 and 4:1), respectively. Most importantly, the skin healing activities of CS/BIO film in the excision wound model in mice and skin burn model in rats showed faster rates of healing compared to CS and placebo. Furthermore, skin stretching and burn wound contraction behavior treated with CS/BIO were higher than that of CS treated skin. In conclusion, the results obtained revealed that CS/BIO films possessed superior burn wound healing activity compared to CS.

Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is a common and severe complication of diabetes mellitus, the etiology of which remains insufficiently understood, particularly regarding the involvement of extracellular vesicles (EVs). In this study, nanoflow cytometry to detect EVs in DFU skin tissues is used and found a significant increase in the Translocase of Outer Mitochondrial Membrane 20 (TOM20) mitochondrial-derived vesicles (MDVs). The role of MDVs in DFU is yet to be reported.

Evaluation of the Effect of Exosomes From Adipose Derived Stem Cells on Changes in GSH/ROS Levels During Skin Photoaging.

Photodermatol Photoimmunol Photomed

January 2025

Center of Burn & Plastic and Wound Healing Surgery, Hengyang Medical School, the First Affiliated Hospital, University of South China, Hengyang, China.

Objective: Exosomes (Exos) from adipose derived stem cells (ADSCs) can delay skin photoaging, but their effects on reactive oxygen species (ROS) remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between adipose derived stem cell exosomes (ADSCs-Exos) in anti-photoaging of skin and glutathione (GSH)/ ROS expression in human fibroblasts.

Methods: A skin photoaging model was established by irradiating human fibroblasts with ultraviolet B (UVB) light in vitro.

A Rare Case of Severe Burns in a Pregnant Woman.

Cureus

December 2024

Department of Gynecology, Division of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Ljubljana University Medical Centre, Ljubljana, SVN.

Although burns are an extremely rare injury during pregnancy, they place a significant additional burden on the body, which is physiologically adapted to pregnancy and therefore limited in its ability to respond effectively to stress. Due to the low incidence of burns during pregnancy, the existing literature is scarce. Case reports are mostly from third-world countries, and there are no official guidelines or recommendations.

Lactate to albumin ratio has limited prognostic value for complications in children under five with burn injuries.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Unidad de Investigación Para la Generación y Síntesis de Evidencias en Salud, Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola, Av. la Fontana 550, la Molina 15024, Lima, Peru.

Evaluate the prognostic performance of the lactate-to-albumin ratio (LAR) for complications in children 5 years of age or younger with second and/or third degree burn injuries during hospitalization in the intensive care unit of a hospital in Lima, Peru. In this retrospective cohort study, we conducted prognostic tests by analyzing the medical records of children aged ≤ 5 years who suffered second- and/or third-degree burn injuries and were subsequently admitted to the ICU of a Lima-based hospital between 2017 and 2022. The LAR was calculated using lactate and albumin values measured within the first 48 h post-burn.
