Electroactive biofilms (EABs) play an important role in bioelectrochemical systems due to their abilities to generate electrons and perform extracellular electron transfer (EET). Here, we investigated the effects of quorum sensing (QS) signals on power output, chlortetracycline degradation, and structure of EABs in MFCs treating antibiotic wastewater. The voltage output of MFCs with C4-HSL and PQS increased by 21.57% and 13.73%, respectively, compared with that without QS signals. The chlortetracycline degradation efficiency in closed-circuit MFCs with C4-HSL and PQS increased by 56.53% and 50.04%, respectively, which resulted from the thicker biofilms, higher biomass, and stronger activities. Additionally, QS signals induced the heterogeneous distribution of EPS for a balance between self-protection and EET under environmental pressure. prevailed by the addition of QS signals to resist high chlortetracycline concentration. Our results provided a broader understanding on regulating EABs within electrode interface to improve their performance for environmental remediation and clean energy development.

Photocatalysis is an effective method for removing tetracycline antibiotics, which are important precursors to the potential carcinogen N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA). Herein, a BiOCl/ZnInS heterojunction was successfully synthesized using a simple hydrothermal method. This heterojunction was applied for the first time to degrade various tetracycline antibiotics and reduce NDMA formation potential (NDMA-FP) under visible-light irradiation.

The behavior and removal of roxithromycin (ROX), oxytetracycline (OTC), chlortetracycline (CTC), and enrofloxacin (ENR) were investigated during the steady state of sludge anaerobic digestion (AD) in semi-continuous mode (37 °C). Sludge was spiked at realistic concentrations (50 μg/L of each antibiotic) and then used to feed the bioreactor for 80 days. Antibiotics were extracted from the substrate and digested sludge samples by accelerated solvent extraction (ASE).

We present a comprehensive photocurrent characterization to explore the near-infrared (NIR) response and photothermal effects induced by mid-gap levels in (SnFe)O (SFO) nanoparticles. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy revealed multiple mid-gap levels due to multivalent Fe ions. The SFO photocatalyst displayed a noticeable temperature rise under NIR irradiation and a considerable photothermal effect across the full solar spectrum during the photocatalytic degradation of chlortetracycline hydrochloride (CTC·HCl).
