Sponge iron (SI) is widely used in water treatment. As effluents from wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) require advanced treatment methodology, three forms of constructed wetlands (CWs): wetlands with sponge iron (SI), copper sulfate modified sponge iron (Cu/SI), and sponge iron coupled with solid carbon sources (C/SI), have been investigated in this paper for the removal effects of organic matter and nutrients in WWTP effluents, and the corresponding mechanisms have been analyzed. The results showed the effect of baffled subsurface-flow constructed wetland (BSFCW) with SI dosing to purify the WWTP effluents after the stable operation. The water flow of this BSFCW is the repeated combination of upward flow and downward flow, which can provide a longer treatment pathway and microbial exposure time. The average removal rates of total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) were 27.80%, 30.17%, and 44.83%, and the average removal rates of chemical oxygen demand (COD) were 19.96%, 23.73%, and 18.38%. The average removal rates of total phosphorus (TP) were 85.94%, 82.14%, and 83.95%. Cu/SI improved the dissolution of iron, C/SI improved denitrification, and a winter indoor temperature retention measure was adopted to increase the effectiveness of wetland treatment during the winter months. After comprehensively analyzing X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and two-dimensional numerical simulation diagrams, a plausible conjecture that microbes use electrons from SI for autotrophic denitrification is presented. Moreover, the stress effect of wetlands dosed with SI on plants decreased stepwise along the course since C/SI used on wetlands had less impact on plant stress.

The conventional hydrothermal synthesis and inherent hysteresis behavior limited the application of MOFs owing to the low kinetic efficiency in dynamic molecular adsorption. Herein, we developed an in-situ nucleation strategy for the preparation of MIL-100-Fe and immobilized it with hierarchy porous scaffold of TEMPO oxidized cellulose nanofiber (TCNF) sponge in the absence of additional organic solvent during fabrication under ambient conditions. The newly recognized mechanisms of gradient molecular transfer were proposed to illustrate the comprehensive DCF adsorption process from solution to micropores of MIL-100-Fe at molecule level triggered by the stray capacitance, varied Laplace pressure, size exclusion and cellulosic labyrinth.

Coupling of iron-carbon can form a mixotrophic denitrification and is regarded as a promising solution for purifying nitrate-rich agricultural runoff. However, its prevalence and efficacy of the synergistic augmentation of nitrogen elimination and net NO sinks remain crucial knowledge gaps in ecological ditches (eco-ditches). Here, we investigated the underlying variability mechanisms by implementing sponge iron (sFe)-coupled Iris hexagonus (IH)- or Myriophyllum aquaticum (MA)-derived biochar produced via microwave-assisted (MW) pyrolysis and conventional pyrolysis.

Four biofilm carriers including pyrite, manganese ore, ceramsite, and polyurethane sponge were used to construct microbial separators (MSs), while their performance in dual-chamber microbial fuel cells (MFCs) was evaluated. Polyurethane sponge and pyrite were superior biofilm carriers for MSs. The dense biofilm on the polyurethane sponge provides MS with optimal barrier capacity against dissolved oxygen and chemical oxygen demand.

Targeting ferroptosis pathway becomes a new solution for cisplatin (DDP) resistance in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD), and further research is required to explore the molecular mechanisms underlying ferroptosis and DDP resistance, providing biotargets for LUAD treatment. In this study, DDP-sensitive A549 cells and DDP-resistant A549/DDP cells were treated with DDP, DDP sensitivity was detected through using CCK-8 method and colony formation assay, ferroptosis-related markers were determined through commercial kits, and the molecular regulatory mechanism was analyzed through methylated RNA immunoprecipitation, RNA pull-down, dual luciferase assay, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and western blotting assay. Results showed that compared to A549 cells, FENDRR was downregulated in A549/DDP cells, and FENDRR increased iron content, labile iron pool, lipid peroxidation, LDH release and ROS levels, accelerating ferroptosis to promote DDP sensitivity.

Enhancing the hemostatic efficacy and minimizing blood loss in the body has consistently been a primary objective for researchers. This study improved the hemostatic efficacy and tissue adhesion strength of the hemostatic material by augmenting the aldehyde groups in the side chains of sodium alginate. Additionally, it immobilized the aldehyde-modified sodium alginate onto the surface of the hemostatic material through complexation with iron ions, thereby enhancing its antibacterial properties.
