Experiments were performed on 64 albino male rats selected according to their ethanol preference. A long-term administration of ethanol produced a number of specific changes in the activity of the enzymes involved in metabolism of ethanol, lipid peroxidation, enzymes of metabolism of xenobiotics. At the continuous ethanol administration, phenazepam was found to normalize the activity of ethanol-metabolizing enzymes, both in vivo and in vitro. Phenazepam also normalized reaction of lipid peroxidation both in vivo and in vitro. The drug was shown to be an inductor with respect to enzymes of xenobiotic metabolism.

Metabolic shifts in cancer cells were found to participate in tumorigenesis, especially driving chemotherapeutic resistance. Ferroptosis is a newly discovered form of cell death induced by excessive accumulations of iron and lipid peroxidation. Susceptibility to ferroptosis can be intrinsically regulated by various cellular metabolic pathways.

Multiple sclerosis is an inflammatory disease of the central nervous system (CNS), characterized by oligodendrocyte loss and demyelination of axons leading to neurodegeneration and severe neurological disability. Despite the existing drugs that have immunomodulatory effects an adequate therapy that slow down or stop neuronal death has not yet been found. Oxidative stress accompanied by excessive release of iron into the extracellular space, mitochondrial damage and lipid peroxidation are important factors in the controlled cell death named ferroptosis, latterly recognized in MS.

Methylmercury (MeHg) bioaccumulation in food webs has been recognized as a significant health risk for over 50 years, yet most studies focus on high concentrations of waterborne inorganic mercury (IHg). This study investigates the effects of dietborne mercury (Hg) exposure at environmentally realistic IHg and MeHg levels on a freshwater food chain. Freshwater mussels, Dreissena polymorpha, were fed with microalgae previously contaminated with 2 and 20 fg IHg or MeHg per cell for 4 d.
