Constructed wetlands (CWs) have been widely used as an ecological technology for removing nutrients from aquatic ecosystems. However, the treatment efficiency of surface flow constructed wetlands (SFCWs) in winter is generally low. To enhance the nutrient removal performance of SFCWs in winter, we developed a novel hardy submerged plant-benthic fauna system by adding () larvae and planting L. in SFCWs. Compared to a system without , the paired system greatly enhanced TN and TP removal with the average removal efficiencies of 54.73% and 94.76%, respectively. Furthermore, the paired system improved NO -N removal efficiency by 29.51% and reached NH -N removal efficiency as high as 86.20% simultaneously. The mass balance analysis indicated that larvae enhanced substrate absorption and plant uptake in the CWs. The results of microbial analysis agreed with the nutrient removal performance, showing that larvae influence the abundance and community structure of microbes related to N removal. As a whole, this study provides a promising ecological strategy for performance intensification of SFCWs in winter.

Background/objectives: This paper examines hunger over time to analyze how food insecurity is impacted by reduced income, including household funding from the government. Federal policies and community-based programs have the ability to prevent increases in food insecurity, particularly for populations that have risk factors, such as households with children; single-parent households; low-income households, especially those in rural areas; Black and Hispanic households; and, households experiencing economic hardships.
Methods: This study is bas ed on a cross-sectional survey that was administered in 2018 and 2019 to food pantry clients, an already food insecure population accessing resources, in Eastern Massachusetts.

The water-level fluctuation zones (WLFZ) in Three Gorges Reservoir encounter several ecological challenges, particularly potential greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and water eutrophication due to water level variations. Therefore, to address those challenges, our study explores the relationships between soil properties (Phosphorus cycle), plant conditions, microbial community, and GHG emissions. Our findings reveal that aboveground plants are the key link in the WLFZ ecosystem, which has previously been overlooked.
